Ergon GA3 Grips Review (video)

With a soft mini-wing design, a rubber compound that’s proven to be quite durable, and an ergonomic shape for all-day comfort, the Ergon GA3 has quickly become a favorite grip for Miles, Neil, Virginia, and me. Each of us run them almost exclusively on trail bikes and bikepacking rigs alike. Ergon recently released new sizing and colors for the GA3, so we thought it was time to sing our praises. One thing that’s really impressed us about the Ergon GA3 is its durability. We’ve had the orange pair shown above since its release at the beginning of 2018. They’ve seen well over 1,500 miles, including on our month-long trip in Colombia this past winter mounted to Virginia’s Deadwood. From our experience, even the soft rubber that makes up the mini-wings seems incredibly durable. Aside from some dirt and grime, the grips themselves are in near perfect condition, save a few scuffs at the end cap.

As of February, Ergon GA3 grips now come in two sizes: Small, which is the same size 30mm diameter as the original GA3, and the new Large, which is 32mm in diameter. Ergon recommends the Small size for hand/glove sizes 6.5 to 8.5, and the Large for 8.5 to 10.5. I wear a large (9) Giro DND as my glove of choice and find that I prefer the new size large GA3 over the original.

Miles’ take: They hit a sweet spot for me. I’ve used the more supportive GP Touring series and the slimmed down GA All-Mountain grips, which are both good for different types of riding, but the GA3s are way more versatile. Enough support for multi-day trips, but the supportive wing doesn’t get in the way when riding technical singletrack—something I didn’t like about the touring grips. The regular size has been great, and I think for gnarly descents I still prefer them as I can get get a good hold, but the new larger size is that much more supportive and comfortable and will probably be my go to grip for long days this summer.
