Arizona Trail Race 2025
AZTR 2025 Tracking, Race Updates, and Results
The Arizona Trail Race 2025 is a self-supported bikepacking challenge on a rugged singletrack route that snakes through the state from south to north. There are two distance variations: the Arizona Trail 300, and the Arizona Trail 800, a complete traverse from Mexico to Utah. Both events run concurrently, and for 2025, they start at the same location and same time on the Arizona/Mexico border. Follow our coverage below…

Zack Freundlich Takes Second Place at AZT800
by Miles ArbourPhoto by John Schilling
Shortly after 1:00 a.m. this morning, Zack Freundlich rolled into Flagstaff, taking second place at the AZT800 and officially completing his Triple Crown Challenge…on a singlespeed! His official finish time was 10 days, 19 hours, 25 minutes, and event organizer John Schilling was there to greet him at the finish.
Karin Pocock is currently in third place overall, and the first place woman by a long shot, with just ~10 miles left on her ride. She should be wrapping up her impressive ride shortly.

Alex Schultz Is First Through Grand Canyon
by Miles ArbourDue to trail closures caused by fires, riders of the 2025 AZTR aren’t hiking across the Grand Canyon from the south rim to the north rim, like most years. This year, they are entering and exiting from the south rim, via the South Kaibab Trailhead and Bright Angel trailhead, forming a loop before starting their ride south to Flagstaff, where this year’s race finishes. Because bikes aren’t allowed to touch the ground in the Grand Canyon, riders hike with their bikes on their backs. It is definitely no walk in the park. Or is it?
Alex Schultz arrived at South Kaibab trailhead last night, took a short nap, and emerged on the other side around 5:00 a.m. this morning. It appears he’s taking a short nap before he sets off on the last 100 miles to Flagstaff. With the next rider over 100 miles behind, it’s going to take a serious mechanical or setback for Alex not to win this year’s race. But, as we know, it’s not over till it’s over!

Alex Schultz Saved by Trail Angel
by Miles ArbourPhoto by John Schilling
Alex Schultz is maintaining his lead in the AZT800, just past the 400-mile marker, and about 50 miles from Payson, Arizona. He was having tire troubles when he rolled into Picketpost, but a generous trail angel gifted him a new tire, so he was back on the trail after just a few hours. Alex currently has a ~60-mile lead ahead of the next rider.

Arizona Trail Race 300 Podium!
by Miles ArbourPhotos by John Schilling
Following Miron Golfman’s AZT300 win earlier this afternoon were the next three finishers of the 300-mile route. Chase Kaufman (2D:11H:09M) and Will Bodewes (2D:12H:16M) finished just over an hour from eachother, and Rocky Gingg (2D:12H:51M*) took fourth place about 20 minutes later. Rocky used outside help to keep rolling after slashing a sidewall, so his finish comes with an asterisk.
Alex Schultz is still holding the lead in the AZT800, and should be coming through Picketpost trailhead at the end of the 300-mile route within the hour. Nicolette Jones is the first place woman in the 300-mile route with just 60 miles to go.

Day One, Cool Temps
by John SchillingFirst photo by Laura K.
The big news of the day were the cool temps. It was 66 degrees as I was driving out of the Canelo Hills at 11:30 this morning. It was a perfect day out there.
A couple of riders reported slashed sidewalls, one broken brake lever. There are no scratches as of yet, but it’s early. A few riders are spending the night in Patagonia.
I went up and rode a few miles of brand new singletrack that was added to the route. It was built two weeks ago! Machinery is still out there working on the next section.
Alex Schultz is leading all riders, putting down a blistering pace. Chase Kaufman and Miron Golfman are duking it out for the 300. Karin Pocock is leading the 800 women and Nicolette Jones is leading the 300 women and in 6th overall.

Alex Schultz Is First to Colossal Cave
by Miles Arbour32-year-old Alex Schultz has taken an early lead as we head into the first night of the 2025 Arizona Trail Race. Alex is racing the 800-mile route, and is already at route-mile 111. Chase Kaufman and Miron Golfman, who are both racing the 300-mile route, are close behind.
The 2025 AZTR is the last event in Alex’ attempt at the Triple Crown, as he finished in the top 30 at the Tour Divide, and fifth at the Colorado Trail Race.
Here’s a quote from an Instagram post Alex made just before the grand depart: “It’s hard as hell, and I always crave more. This year looks a little different, with a finish in Flagstaff and a shorter Grand Canyon Portage, but I am excited to change it up a little. Embrace the hardships and just keep moving, it always pays off. I am going for my third finish of the AZTR800.”
