This question is regarding my Garmin Edge 840. I’m doing a Divide section early next week, and having had problems with GPS units in the past, how do I know that the route I sent to the 840 will be there, and how do I find it? Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys! Living proof here that blind squirrels do find nuts and live to ride another day! After touching several options on the computer, the ride transferred to the 840. For awhile the anxiety took a vacation and there was the calm before the storm! When I took out on the ride, I needs to reroute to the start, from my location one of the roads I needed to take had been erased by an addition to the Seeley Lake airport. Fortunately a kind old boy pointed out that I needed to cross his neighbors property to get to the road. From there the ride proceeded smoothly until day 3, and Garmin decided to have its own special way of getting lost, assent profiles wrong, just lots of special things! The saving grace was I had RWGPS going on my phone as backup and it kept me on the straight and narrow! It was a short but great ride, was very greatful for the time on the divide given tome! Thanks again!

I echo Daniel's and Miles' advice. It "should" work. I will then say that I spent 3 hours in Portugal one morning in March trying to get RWGPS to sync with Garmin Connect. Definitely make sure you save your RWGPS under "pinned" routes in your library. I had another frustrating Garmin experience a few days later in Andalusia, and after 15 years, I divorced Garmin and got a Wahoo Element Bolt delivered to my hotel in Sevilla (using BikeInn, which will ship to points all over EU for like 2 euros). I love my Wahoo, and it's SO much easier to sync routes with.

Hi Tim, I use an 840 as well. I use the method that Miles described to get the route into my unit. Just make sure my Garmin Connect and RWGPS accounts are linked. Then upload the file to RWGPS, pin it, open my Garmin Connect mobile app and turn my Edge 840 on. The unit will sync and should pull the pinned routes from RWGPS. I always make sure it's there, in my 840, before I leave a place with good internet (cell or wifi, since I can use my RWGPS mobile app to pin routes that I have previously uploaded). I do find that Garmin Edge units struggle with navigational cues on routes that are over about 100-150 miles. I split my route into logical sections between 75-150 miles and make sure they all are pinned and loaded into my unit. Then I select each segment as needed. I try to make the trimmed down routes day-specific (so day 1, day 2, etc) or between landmarks like towns. I actually find this really helps with on route planning since I can clearly see "I have 75 miles and 8000 feet of climbing tomorrow." But it also provides a lot of backup since even if that one section gives you trouble, the rest are separate and hopefully work better. I hope that helps!

Hey Tim, normally your routes will be under 'navigation', 'courses', but that all depends on how you are sending it to your device. I normally use RWGPS, pin it, and then sync my RWGPS account with my Garmin to access my routes that way. There is some info on that method here: https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=NaHPJietLh1JONP2sz5DdA
