  • So how difficult is Porcupine Rim with a loaded bike? My riding partner and I are headed out to ride the Kokopelli in a couple weeks and he's hung up on the Porcupine Rim being rated as "difficult" by a number of trail databases. He's not a fan of hike-a-bike and the notion of downhill hike-a-bike is 'Type 3' fun for him. That said, he's a very strong intermediate MTB'er on a hardtail plus bike, we've bikepacked in the area a couple of times and I have no doubts in his abilities. Porcupine Rim seems like icing on the Kokopelli cake to me, but if you have any other experience either for or against, I'd appreciate your relating them. Thanks!

  • Hey Y'all, just did my first two day trip, about 85 miles in total on a beautiful trail here in central, PA. I used my old Bianchi road bike which did great on the trail I was on, but I'm realizing that I will likely need a gravel or mountain bike to really expand the types of trips I can take. All that said, wondering if anyone has recommendations for a decent, older mountain bike frame I could build on or a decent entry level gravel bike. There are so many damn options out there I have no idea where to start! Thanks in advance.

  • Are there any boutique manufacturers of mechanical front derailleurs, someone other than Shimano, SRAM, Campy, Microshift, etc? I'm looking to do an all-road type of build and want to spec it with some non-standard parts Growtac, Madrone, Ingrid, etc, but the FD is the one component I haven't found a non-standard solution for. Any insights appreciated!

  • I purchased a Salsa Timberjack several years ago to use for bikepacking/singletrack, but found my normal riding consists of pavement/forest roads/light singletrack. I do have a gravel bike (Rocky Mountain Solo) for routes that are more pavement/light gravel. The Timberjack is comfortable and fun, but it feels heavy, slow, and overkill for the riding I do. I've been eyeing up a Bridge Club to replace it, but money is a big factor and selling my TJ still leaves a big gap. Will a Bridge Club (or other recommendation for a modern, big tire ATB) feel that much different than my TJ? I don't have experience with similar bikes and inventory in this category around my area is pretty limited. Any advice is appreciated - thanks!

  • Hello- I'm planning to bike the VTXL this winter and would like to upgrade the brakes on my recently purchased used Surly Wednesday. Any recommendations on brake models that have been proven to perform well in variable freeze/thaw conditions? My research suggests I should be looking at hydraulic, though I'm open to exploring mechanical if folks have had success with them. Thank you!

  • New Mexico Off Road Runner. I want to do this route solo beginning December 8th. I plan to average 50-75 miles per day. Checking the all-important weather, I’m hoping this group can weigh in on any experiences bikepacking this part of NM in winter months. I will prepare with appropriate clothing and sleep system but don’t want embark if the collective experience thinks it’s not a good idea! Any and all advice, including alternative routes, would be much appreciated!! Thank you!

  • I have a Tanglefoot Hardtack and want to use a Widefoot cargo cage to carry a large water bottle under the down tube. The frame has 3 pack mounts under the down tube, but it also has cable guides that make it impossible to mount the cage flush with the frame. I could use some spacers to mount the cage a little ways out from the frame (8-10 mm would be plenty of clearance) but I worry that this will amplify the force of the cargo on the bolts and the frame during riding. Assuming the load is reasonable under normal use (e.g. a full 1.5 or 2 L water bottle), is it sketchy to use spacers to bolt a cargo cage to a steel down tube?

  • I asked this question in at the end of the review of the Stooge MK6, but figured I could ask here as well: I am looking into getting a touring/ off-road bike, coming from road biking but not really interested in getting suspension or a gravel bike (I usually do gravel under biking on my current road bike). I am living in the Netherlands and will mostly use it to do any riding in autumn, winter, spring in the forests around where I live, mixed in with some short bikepacking trips and do all bike on holidays. Currently thinking between Stooge (MK or Dirt tracker) or Tumbleweed Sunliner (found a great deal) based on the reviews I’ve read here and elsewhere, and them being beautiful bikes. Any advise on the differences between the two?
