  • So how heavy is ok? I’m off on 3rd Bikepacking trip it’s 3 days I have reasonably light kit but with a tent stove mat bag food some spares and light clothes for evenings a tiny weeny stool and about 3l of water storage my normally light bike is really starting to get heavy , I don’t have many places to get more food so have all I need for three days. So the question is how much do your non-race rigs end up weighing? Roughly of course :)

  • Does anyone have any wisdom they can shed on building an ECR equipped with a Rohloff? I've read Logan Watts' artciles comparing the OD cranks to a 1x to the Rohloff, but I see that the 38/16t front/rear cog combo "killed" his knees, then switching to a front 34t. So, in essence, what has worked for you? Which model worked with the Surly torque slots? What do you wish you'd done differently?

  • I’m planning to hike the Westfjords Way during the first week of September and have heard about the challenging weather conditions in the area. I’m considering using an Outdoor Research Helium Bivy, which is lightweight and waterproof, but I’m unsure how well it will hold up in the Westfjords’ weather. I plan to seek out sheltered camping spots along the route to mitigate potential issues. Could you provide your insights or recommendations on this setup?

  • Any experience with OEX (Go Outdoors) brand tents? They are quite cheap, and review well, but I'm not sure I can trust online reviews. I want to dip my toes in the Bikepacking world, and a £70 tent (eg Phoxx I) seems like a good starting point before invresting lots of money in gear.

  • This question is regarding my Garmin Edge 840. I’m doing a Divide section early next week, and having had problems with GPS units in the past, how do I know that the route I sent to the 840 will be there, and how do I find it? Thanks in advance!

  • Hi! My wife and I are heading to Colorado for 2-weeks in mid August. We're thinking of sticking around the Gunnison region and are wondering if there are any routes that people reccomend above others? We're thinking of doing a few easier shorter routes to aclimate to the altitude (suprisingly Minnesota is not know for it's high alpine persuits) and then 1-2 longer/more challenging routes. Also any reccomendations for food, accomidation, etc. would be greatly appriciated. Thanks!

  • I'm currently plotting a 3 month long trip through the UK - hitting as much off-road as I possibly can. I have a question about byways/footpaths/bridleways. I've done a bit of Googling and it appears that there's mixed opinions on bikes on "public footpaths" even though the official word is "if it's a yellow arrow, stay away". Given the proliferation of these, and the beautiful places they lead, it's very tempting to chance it - but I'm interested to hear what UK bikepackers experiences are of this. Should I avoid them when planning, or see what it looks like when I get there?

  • I'm going for Tian Shan traverse this August and can't decide on sleeping bag. Do you think a +4C comfort rating (cumulus liteline 300) will be enough? I have some warmer but bulkier bags or could combine it with a quilt, but maybe +4c and sleeping in puffy jacket and pants will be just ok to be on the safe side? Thx

  • Does anyone know if a direct-to-cell satellite plan (through T-Mobile in the USA or Rogers in Canada) will be any easier to pause (for months that you don't need it) than other satellite (Iridium) plans from Garmin, Spot, ACR, etc?

  • Hiking shoes for bikepacking. We're planning a 6-week cycling trip to New Zealand with my partner. Up to now, we've always done our bikepacking trips with clipless shoes and a pair of light mesh shoes for the evening. In order to be able to enjoy the natural beauty of NZ that is not accessible by bike, this time we plan to ride on flat pedals with low trail/hiking/approach shoes and a pair of Bedrocks for the camp or when it's hot while pedaling. Do you have a tip for a shoe with a sole that's stiff enough for pedaling, offers enough grip for hiking, is still comfortable and doesn't take 3 days to dry out in the rain? Thanks for your advice!

  • What is the easiest to figure out and use, the Garmin, Edge 1050, or 840? Disclaimer…I’m an old fart that is struggling with this new technology. I have an 840 but would upgrade if the learning curve was shorter!
