The Esker Japhy was released in late 2020 and positioned as a slightly rowdier alternative to their popular Hayduke model. It’s based around big 29″ tires, a Chromoly steel frame, a 120mm travel fork, a long front end, and a slack head tube angle. On paper, it has all the fixings for a proper bikepacking and backcountry singletrack rig, and after putting it through its paces shortly after its release, I’m happy to report that the Japhy was all it was hyped up to be.
Since then, Esker has added a titanium Japhy to their lineup, and as of this week, they added a new Burlap colorway and some other minor updates for 2023. Everything else we liked about it remains the same, including external cable routing, well-balanced geometry, solid build kit options, adjustable dropouts, and lots of mounting points (minus the rear rack mounts). The geometry changes include a 1° steeper seat tube angle and a slightly shorter top tube length, but it otherwise remains quite similar to the version we tested.
As always, Esker is offering the Japhy is two well-specced complete build kits. The GX complete is based around a SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain, Marzocchi Z2 120mm fork, Shimano SLX brakes, and an SDG Tellis dropper post. It retails for $3,000 USD. The XT complete has a Shimano XT 12-speed drivetrain, MRP Raven fork, Industry Nine wheels and stem, Shimano XT brakes, and the new Wolf Tooth Resolve dropper post. It’s priced at $4,000 USD. You can also pick yourself up a frame for $1,000, which is available in all three color options: Sundry, Burlap, and Ranchera.
