“How To Go Fast With Jan Heine” is a new episode from Ted King’s podcast King Of The Ride that dives into some of the science behind Rene Herse and their philosophy on tires. Though a lot of what they discuss is common knowledge for many in the alt-cycling space, it’s cool to get a refresher on both the ideas that sparked the early days of Rene Herse Cycles and some of the stories from the small brand’s salad days using borrowed SRM power meters, riding on rumble strips for 18 miles, and even hearing Jan talk about making his own Gore-Tex rain jacket in the pre-Rapha days of cycling apparel.
Having never tried a pair of Rene Herse tires myself, my interest continues to grow as I listen to Jan’s approach toward tire technology and how much he seems to genuinely believe in his own product. I think the slowest tire is a flat one. So, while I’d love to test some, I think whatever I’d go for would need to be in the endurance casing realm, as I tend to be pretty rough on my equipment.
