Jay Ritchey’s new company, Bags by Bird (BXB), just released the Teardrop, the first flared drop-bar specific handlebar bag on the market. This classic, long-flap style bag looks super nice and is now available for pre-order. Here are the details…

In case you’re unfamiliar, Bags by Bird (BXB) is a one-person business founded by filmmaker Jay Ritchey. Jay started making small batches of bags in his 100 square foot workspace because he personally wanted a classic saddlebag with modern updates for his bikepacking adventures. Eventually, others expressed interest in his bags, and BXB was born.

His first “production” bag was the Goldback, which I am currently testing and should have a review of finished up shortly. It’s a great bag with a lot of thought put into it. But even more exciting—at least for those who gravitate toward drop bars—is the all-new Teardrop, a drop-bar-specific “saddlebag style” handlebar bag. The Teardrop is the first of its kind, designed for use with flared drop handlebars that are 42cm or wider. An ideal bar would be a Salsa Cowchipper (my personal favorite) with 24° of flare in the drops. The photo below shows the bag mounted between 46cm Cowchippers.

BXB Teardrop Features

  • Capacity: 13L
  • Dimensions: 12″-16″ Wide (30-41cm), 7″ Deep (18cm), 9″ Tall (23cm)
  • Dowel height: 6.5″-8.5″ (16.5-21.5cm) for mounting to rack, bag sitting plumb
  • Tapered design helps free up hand positions on the bar tops (the top is 12″ wide (30cm) and the widest at the bottom is just over 16″ (41cm))
  • Three strips of rack attachment MOLLE on the underside—strap it to narrow or wide racks
  • HDPE rigid liner to give the bag shape and help tire clearance in rackless configurations
  • Two slim side pockets for snacks and gloves. Gromet at bottom for water escape
  • Closure: para-cord cinch, expandable long-flap lid (adds 5-10L drybag capacity)
  • Fully lined with yellow X-Pac VX21
  • Fabric, straps, buckles are made in the USA

The BXB Teardrop is available in Burgundy canvas, Graphite X-Pac, and Tropical Camo Xpac. Both are lined with hi-vis yellow VX21. Even with a liner, the bag isn’t claimed to be fully waterproof, although Jay says it’s constructed to be very weather-proof. The BXB Teardrop can be pre-ordered now for $215. PS: Dear Ritchey Logic, please re-release the Breakaway Ascent! This time with thru-axles, clearance for 650b x 2.25″ tires, and extra bottle mounts under the downtube and on the fork blades. It’ll sell like hotcakes. Pretty please.
