A top tube bag is an exceptionally handy addition to any bikepacking kit. An ideal cubby hole for stashing snacks and small items, they’re great accessories for any ride, no matter the distance. We often hear top tube bags referred to as “gas tanks” thanks to a teardrop shape reminiscent of 1970s dirt bikes. However, it’s worth noting that that name was actually coined and trademarked by Revelate Designs. We’ll keep to the drier but more descriptive “top tube bag,” rather than more pictorial alternatives for the purpose of this roundup.
As you might expect, a top tube pack is mounted behind the head tube and secured by two or three velcro straps (or bolts) to the top tube and head tube, helping stabilize it from side-to-side movement. While recent designs have evolved in size, shape, and materials used, the top tube bag’s concept and convenient placement is nothing new; before modern bikepacking iterations, they took the form of smaller “bento boxes” used by triathletes and road racers.
As with stem bags, top tube bags offer high-volume storage and one-handed access to snacks and energy bars. They’re also perfect for other items that warrant easy access, such as a multi-tool, a cellphone, lights, trail mix, a half-eaten burrito, or even an ice-cold beer.
Choosing the Right Top Tube Bag
Considerations to factor in include size, width, and length, with larger top tube bags being inherently less stable than their smaller counterparts. And, depending on the width of your bottom bracket, the larger and wider the design, the more likely a top tube bag is to graze against your knees when you’re riding out of the saddle, especially if you tend to throw your bike from side to side. Height and top tube clearance are worth pondering too, particularly on smaller frames. And there’s padding and internal dividers to factor in, depending on what you intend to stow.
Perhaps the most important point worth checking is the position of the velcro fastening points in relation to your framebag. Some are fixed, while others are adjustable. If in doubt, a model with moveable fasteners will likely be the best option, though the former tend to be the most stable.
50+ TOP TUBE BAGS
For this roundup, we’ve gathered together more than 70 top tube bags, ranging in size from snack size to more substantial luggage. For the numbers folks, note that the sizes listed are length x width x height in inches and centimetres. These are the longest dimensions and don’t take into account the way a pack generally tapers down from the headtube. We’ve also included an approximate volume in liters, which is estimated in some cases and, like the dimensions, doesn’t take different shapes and tapers into account.
Lastly, if you have a top tube bag that you love that didn’t make the list, please let us know about it in the conversation section below!

Andrew The Maker Top Tube Bag

- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 9.5 x 4.5 x 2.25"
- Size (Metric): 24 x 11 x 6cm
Andrew The Maker’s Top Tube Bags are all custom and made to order. There is a cable port at the front lower corner of the bag for charging duties or headphones, and it can be strap on or bolt-on depending on your preferences. The bag’s sides are reinforced with plastic stiffeners, and the bolt on version (as tested) is reinforced with grommets and comes complete with stainless bolts and washers. The strap on version has adjustable straps, and both are available in wide selection of colours in both X-Pac and Cordura.
Neil’s Thoughts: When it comes to elegance and functionality among bikepacking bags, Andrew the Maker is always in the conversation. Andrew is a one man band based in Kansas City making custom and stock bikepacking bags. Whether he likes to make them or not, his Custom Top Tube bolt on bag is a winner. Large, stable, and beautiful. The bag has room to fit plenty of snacks for an extended period of time and has proven to be one of the most secure fitting top tube bags I have ever used. When I saw he was working with that splatter paint Cordura, I was excited to see he still had some left to make this bag.

Bedrock Bags Dakota Tank Bag
- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 8.5 x 4 x 3"
- Size (Metric): 22 x 10 x 8cm
We’ve noted how Bedrock’s consistently been releasing ever more elegant and innovative bags over the last couple of years – and the Dakota is no exception. The pack has a pleasingly curved, tapered design that offers the perfect amount of volume for a medium/large sized top tube bag. The interior of the bag is accessible through a single center #8 waterproof YKK zipper. The Dakota has two attachment straps, one fixed on the bottom aft of the bag, and one adjustable soft velcro head tube strap on the front. Each is reinforced with a non-skid liner to help secure the little sucker in place.
In addition, at the top of the front daisy chain, there’s an integrated elastic band that can wrap around the top-cap of the headset, providing additional leverage to keep the bag stable. Another factor in the bag’s impressive stability is a full surround HDPE insert, which is sandwiched between the outer fabric and the inner diamond ripstop liner. The Dakota is available in 500d Cordura Multicam Black or VX-42 X-Pac. Top fabric on all bags is made from VX-21.

Bike Bag Dude Top Tube Garage
- Volume: 1.4L
- Material: Cordura / X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 11.4 x 4.7 x 2.7”
- Size (Metric): 29 x 12 x 7cm
Australia-based Bike Bag Dude is best known for their high-quality custom bags, allowing customers to choose nearly every colour on their bags, including the thread colour! The Garage is a top tube bag with a big capacity, adjustable straps, and a fully seam taped construction. It’s made with a water resistant YKK #10 zipper, and has a built in cable port for charging duties.
Neil’s Thoughts: I think it’s safe to say this is the largest top tube bag I have used. The bag has the ability to carry a huge amount of snacks, Red Bull and yes beer or beers rather. When you need all the space you can get, this might be your best option. Thigh or knee rub is an issue for any oversized top tube bag, so the design comes installed with integrated one wrap straps to help alleviate that. The bags large zipper opens to a bright interior for easy access and contrast. The daisy chain along the bottom and side allow you to mix and match a variety of other straps and comes with loads of Velcro to ensure it stays put.

JPaks Footlong SnakPak
- Volume: 1.6L
- Material: VX-21 X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 12 x 4.5 x 3.5”
- Size (Metric): 31 x 11 x 9cm
The Footlong SnakPak offers a massive 12” of total length, but the same tapered shape as the standard SnakPak. You can expect all of the same characteristics, but with increased carrying capacity for those looking for some serious snack storage. Even with its massive size, JPaks really nailed the tapered design, allowing for plenty of clearance while climbing out of the saddle, while the wide daisy chain and grippy base does a great job at keeping it in place. The Footlong SnakPak also has an internal velcro divider that helps organize its contents as well as keep the bulge down to a minimum. A top tube bag of this size is a great option for those looking to keep weight centralized on the bike while riding technical trails or routes.
Miles’ thoughts: The JPaks Footlong SnakPack has quickly become my go-to top tube bag for day rides and bikepacking trips. I find smaller bags just don’t provide that much useful space, so the extra capacity of the Footlong version goes a long way for snack and cellphone toting. It’s well constructed, stable when cinched tightly to the top tube, and looks great.
Want something even bigger? The JPaks’ FarvaPak adds an additional 3” of total length on the already impressively large Footlong SnakPak, tapering from 4.5” up front to 2.5” in the rear.

JPaks Snakpak
- Volume: 1.4L
- Material: VX-21 X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 9.5 x 4.5 x 3.5”
- Size (Metric): 24 x 11 x 9cm
At 9.5” long and nearly 5” wide, JPaks’ SnakPak sits at the larger end of the Top Tube Bag sizing range. Construction comes courtesy of a single piece of X-Pac VX1, which along with the waterproof zip, should help keep water ingress at bay – stitching notwithstanding. Even given its large proportions, the SnakPak manages to sit fairly stably in place, thanks to large velcro tabs, a rubberised base, and a wide daisy chain. Although its zip doesn’t run from top to toe, the bag is long enough that only those with especially large paws will have any issues digging around inside. Thanks to its generous size and high density padding, it’s a particularly good option for anyone in need of extra stowage space – or for those who like to keep delicate objects protected and close to hand. This rigid boxiness also means one handed access is a breeze. There’s also a Fatty SnakPak that’s the same overall length but 4.25” wide in the front, tapering down to 2.25” in the back.

The base straps onto your top tube and the main bag clicks firmly into place thanks to a strong mechanical/magnet attachment. There is an additional steerer tube strap for extra stability, and the entire bag can be removed from the base with a quick twist. The bag uses a waterproof TruZip zipper and has fully welded seams, making it 100% waterproof and airtight. Nuclear Sunrise Titan Tank
- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 8.5 x 4.5 x 2.5"
- Size (Metric): 22 x 11 x 6cm
The Titan Tank is a medium sized top tube tube bag with a relative slim, untapered and simple but burly design. A velcro and loop closure secures it solidly to the top tube, with a choice of three loops around which to run the velcro tab to the steerer tube. Meanwhile, its heavy duty zip features a dust and grime guard, tested in the desert expanse of the Chihuahua desert, where the bag is constructed. The sides are padded with high density foam, while internally, a nifty phone-sized divider keeps your valued lifeline to the outside world safe from clattering around. Note though that the base itself isn’t padded, making the main compartment in the Titan Tank best suited to snacks and softer items, rather than the likes of a multi tool, which will clunk on the top tube. All kinds of fun and funky colours are available (+$5 for Multicam) and overall, it’s a simple, stable bag with a dash of character.
Neil’s Thoughts: The first top tube bag I had ever used and my go-to bag for almost all of my major race accomplishments including the 2015 Tour Divide and 2016 Colorado Trail Race. It’s held up when I’ve been frustrated, delirious and abusive to it. It’s big enough to fill all of my snacks for the day, but small enough not to get in the way when hammering on the pedals. The daisy chain accommodates different steer tube stacks, the padded body gives it structure and protection, and the zipper glides freely opening to a bright interior. The Titan Tank is a durable, simple and functional bag made in El Paso, Texas.

Ortlieb Cockpit-Pack
- Volume: 0.8L
- Material: PU Coated Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 3 x 3"
- Size (Metric): 8 x 8cm
Potentially the most unique bag in the entire index, Ortlieb’s Cockpit-Pack is a featherweight top tube bag boasting a waterproof construction and an interesting side-access design. An internal storm flap keeps the weather out via a welded/sealed lip and external drain holes. It’s a clever design that also has an internal stiffener to assist with one-handed access. The Cockpit-Pack is PVC-free, made in Germany, and provides 0.8L of storage.
Logan’s Thoughts: I used the Ortlieb Cockpit-Pack on a 1,400 mile scouting trip and really came to like it. I’ve heard some folks complain about not being able to access snacks with one hand, but I generally don’t store snacks in my top tube bag. I loved the fact that it’s completely waterproof, so I stored headphones, my phone, cables, my headlamp, and other items that needed to be accessed fairly regularly, but need not be exposed to the elements. It worked perfectly. It’s also pretty stable and can be opened with one hand, but not as easy as other bags with a single top zipper.

- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: Cordura / X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 8.3 X 4 X 2.5"
- Size (Metric): 21 X 10 X 6CM
The Outer Shell Top Tube Bag (yep, no wildly creative names here) is a bolt-on or strap-on bag that comes in one 0.9L size and is 8.3″ (21cm) long by 2.5″ (6cm) wide, tapering down to 1.6″ (4cm) at the end. It’s 4″ (10cm) tall at the far end, which curves down to just over 2″ (5cm) at the closer end. Outer Shell supplies it with rubberized straps and hardware for bikes with top tube bolts, and while it’s not the biggest top tube bag in this list, it has proven to be exceptionally stable thanks to its thoughtful design and internal plastic structure.

Oveja Negra Snack Pack
- Volume: 0.8L
- Material: VX-21 X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 8 x 4 x 2.5”
- Size (Metric): 20 x 10 x 6cm
Like other bags made by the Salida, Colorado based company, the Snack Pack is constructed using as many U.S. sourced materials as possible. Detailing abounds. The sides have die cut polyethylene inserts for structure. It has a custom welded and die cut Hook and Loop strap that cams back onto itself, and Velcro OneWrap attachment points. The zipper is a #8 YKK Uretek water resistant zipper with a nickel slider. The inside of the bag is lined with 400d pack cloth and has 3/16″ closed cell foam to protect the tubing. The Snack Pack is a refined and very well constructed bag with attention to the minute, including a rubberized zipper garage, a perfectly stable size, and a nice looking brand tag. The Snack Pack is available in two sizes: large and x-large, in six different colour options.
Cass’ thoughts: The Snack Pack is a simple but extremely elegant and well executed top tube bag. It stays put over the roughest terrain, and those side stiffeners ensure a smooth zip action, meaning tasty contents are easy to tuck into, without a pause in your pedal stroke.

Pack Northwest Top Tube Bag
- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 8 x 4.5 x 2.5"
- Size (Metric): 20 x 11 x 6cm
Designed with stability and ease of use in mind, the Pack Northwest Top Tube Bag delivers. Handmade in Bellingham, Washington by Hilary Neevel and her small team, their take on the top tube bag features some unique little touches that we have to yet to see on any other bags out there. The bag is constructed from a VX21 X-Pac exterior with a 1000D Cordura spine, with extra padding along the tubes and plastic stiffeners in the side panels. It has a neat exterior phone pocket with an elastic closure—a feature that’s very handy for those navigating with their phone—and a YKK water resistant zipper for the main closure.
One fixed locking strap, at the rear of the bag, securely tightens to the top tube and some grippy fabric helps keeps it extra stable. There is a webbing daisy chain for an additional velcro strap in front of the main fixed strap, plus a small webbing strap with a locking buckle for up front. The Top Tube Bag is currently available in five colours (black, navy, grey, purple, and teal) and retails for $60 USD.
Miles’ thoughts: Although I haven’t spent much time with Pack Northwest’s Top Tube Bag yet, it’s easily one of the most stable top tube bags I’ve used for its size. The phone pocket fits my iPhone 6 with a bulky case which can be great for zipping around town or double checking turns while bikepacking. The fixed rear strap and sturdy side panels really help keep things in place, even when fully loaded, which is a pretty big deal considering its size. I’m impressed.

Revelate Gas Tank
- Volume: 1.1L
- Material: ECOPAK X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 9 x 5 x 2.5”
- Size (Metric): 23 x 13 x 6cm
The Gas Tank was updated in 2022 with a new 3D-welded lid to to better hold its shape and help with a smooth, one-handed operation.
The Revelate Designs Gas Tank is perhaps the most iconic top tube bag of the group – if there was such a thing in the bikepacking niche. Like most bags made by the Anchorage based company, the Gas Tank is sewn in the USA. It’s a hefty, medium sized bag constructed mostly of ultralight, weatherproof, and abrasion resistant VX-42 X-pac, with a reinforced internal closed-cell insulation layer. The beefy and weatherproof wrap-around zipper has proven incredibly sturdy, and allows easy access to the full compartment of the bag. Its internal area is separated by an optional velcro divider that can form two separate chambers, or remain folded to the sides to maintain a single large compartment. It’s worth noting the inside is lined with a yellow high contrast Cordura liner.
With two attachment straps, the Gas Tank was originally designed for use with Revelate’s frame bags. That said, the bag has proven itself versatile and we’ve fitted it with frame bags from both Porcelain Rocket and Bedrock Bags. The bag shown here has a single fixed head tube strap, but the newer versions feature a daisy chain and an adjustable height front velcro strap.
Logan’s thoughts: Overall, the Gas Tank has proven extremely durable… I’ve used it on countless small bikepacking trips as well as long trips in Spain and Africa. It has the prefect amount of space for this application and is remarkably sturdy fitting on the bike.

Revelate Jerrycan
- Volume: 0.6L
- Material: VX-21 X-pac
- Size (Imperial): 5.5 x 4 x 2”
- Size (Metric): 14 x 10 x 5cm
The Jerrycan is another Revelate classic. At 2″ wide, it’s slim enough not to rub against your knees, while its HDPE side panel inserts ensure it stays slim when fully packed. As diminutive as it is, the Jerrycan still provides a very handy stowage spot – an internal elasticated loop keeps a multi tool from ricocheting around – and is a great use of the dead space at the junction of your seatpost and frame. We found it perfect for an inner tube, or for stashing a set of night lights.
The Jerrycan has seen some updates of the years, and now exists in a standard wedge shape and a bent version to accommodate braces at the seat tube / top tube junction. It has also slightly increased in size since the original version. It’s made from VX21 X-Pac side panels, ballistic nylon edges, and a bright yellow nylon liner with closed cell foam padding. The zipper is a water resistant #5 YKK.
Miles’ Thoughts: The Revelate Jerrycan was one of the very first accessory bags I purchased during my introduction to bikepacking. It provides the perfect place for smaller multi-tools and repair kit items, tucking them out of the away until you really need them. It’s small enough that it doesn’t interfere with your legs, and stays put even when loaded up.

Revelate Mag-Tank
- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: VX-42 X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 8.5 x 5 x 2.5”
- Size (metric): 22 x 13 x 6cm
Revelate Designs’ Mag-Tank shares a similar shape, build, and size to the standard Gas Tank top tube bag, but uses a unique two piece hook and latch buckle with mechanical engagement that secures via internal magnets. This design allows for simple one-handed access, and the double layer VX21 X-Pac flap overlaps the opening considerably to keep the weather out. The body of the Revelate Mag-Tank is constructed out of polyurethane coated VX42 XPac. The interior features a 420 denier yellow and red lining that sandwiches closed cell foam padding on the bottom and front, and HDPE on the sides to keep it stiff.
Logan’s Thoughts: All in all I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the Revelate Mag-Tank. As mentioned in the full review, the closure system is perfect in both quick operation and security. It also sports a streamlined and sharp design, and for me it’s the perfect size. I’ve used it for everything from big bikepacking trips, to local trail rides carrying a set of keys, my wallet, an iPhone, and a snack or two. It has a ton of miles on it at this point and works flawlessly.

Revelate Mag-Tank 2000
- Volume: 1.4L
- Material: RevVX-21 / 42 X-Pac
- Size (Imperial): 8.5 x 4.5 x 4.5“
- Size (Metric): 22 x 11 x 11cm
The Mag-Tank 2000 shares a nearly identical design to their quick-access, magnetic buckled Mag Tank, but boasts 50% greater capacity. Named after its calorie holding capacity, the Mag Tank-2000 is still relatively slim at its base, but uses a tapered wedge shape to offer impressive capacity. Anything from gummy bears to french fries, the Mag-Tank 2000 will carry it. It is available with your choice of a bolt-on or strap-on attachment.
Logan’s Thoughts: I’ve put a lot of miles on the Mag-Tank 2000 and really like having the extra cavernous space in that position on big trips. You can pretty much put about anything in it and it’s secure and stable as well. One word of warning: it works better on wide, carbon top tubes. On skinny metal tubes, it tends to fold down around the tube over time, despite it’s internal padded bottom.

Rogue Panda Alamo – Gordo Top Tube Bag
- Volume: 1.5L
- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 9 x 4 x 3.5"
- Size (Metric): 23 x 10 x 9cm
The Alamogordo Top Tube Bag is just like Rogue Panda’s Alamo, but fatter. With 50% more capacity, to be exact. With the ability to hold up to 16 snickers bars, the Alamogordo shares the same design as Alamo as well—including HDPE stiffeners and foam padding. The daisy chain bottom and front should make it easy to work around any frame bag setup, and Rogue Panda also claims a 16oz can can fit in horizontally. Just saying.
Looking for something even bigger? Rogue Panda added the Gordito Grande to their Alamo top tube bag lineup with a massive 2.5L capacity to fit 26 full Snickers bars!
Neil’s Thoughts: The bigger version of the Alamo, the Alamorgordo and the Alamo have roughly the same length, but where they differ is in the height. The Alamogordo is roughly 50% larger and has all the same features of the Alamo; daisy chains, plastic stiffeners throughout, padded bottom and a secure fit, afterall, it’s tested on the chunk of the Arizona Trail, which is out their backyard in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Rogue Panda Alamo – Regular Top Tube Bag
- Volume: 0.9L
- Material: X-Pac / Cordura
- Size (Imperial): 8 x 3.5 x 3"
- Size (Metric): 20 x 9 x 8cm
According to Rogue Panda, “The Alamo is a result of a lot of trial and error to create a bag that sticks to the bike.” The daisy chain on the front allows for adjustable attachment, to better fit any frame, while still providing optimum stability. In addition, the bag also has HDPE stiffeners on the side panels, as well as a foam layer on the bottom and front, to help keep its shape. A moveable top tube strap helps pair it with different framebags, with a rubberized membrane to help stick it in place. Overall, its medium stature, stiff design and attention to detail in the strap design ensure there’s no shortage in stability, coupled with quick, one handed, gunslinging access.
Neil’s Thoughts: The small top tube bag from Rogue Panda is a perfect size for day rides, or if you tend not to pack too much gear on your top tube. The easy to open and close bag comes with a variety of mounting points to mix and match other bags and has a solid fit on the bike. While it can’t carry my Iphone and repair kit at once, it does a great job carrying a tube, Co2, and other repair needs as well as a snack. The bag is offered in a variety of colors, including their unique printed fabric and also available in bolt on or not.

Stealth Bike Bag’s Top Loader is handmade in New Zealand by Michael Trudgen. Since 2014, Stealth has been producing high quality bikepacking bags and accessories out of his shop in Wellington—where pre-arranged visits are welcomed. The Top Loader is made from a mix of 500D and 1000D Cordura with a bright 70D liner inside. It uses a water repellent YKK zipper, includes a cable port at the front of the bag, and has one large top tube strap as well as a unique cord lock attachment to secure under the stem. Stealth has also introduced a cool Fidlock magnetic mountain system, as pictured, for a strap-free but ultra secure attachment.
The fabrics used are PU (polyurethane) coated on the inside and has a DWR (durable water repellent) coating on the outer. This makes the bag very weather resistant, but because the seams are not sealed water will seep in over time and is not considered 100% waterproof.
Neil’s Thoughts: I hate when things get stale in the bikepacking world, it happens from time to time, but then out of the corner of my eye, I see something that is unique and I get really excited. That’s the case with the Stealth Top Loader. The Top Loader is different in that it uses the Fidlock magnetic system to attach to the toptube to replace straps. The design comes with two magnetic bolts that hand tighten to the top tube. While it’s not the most stable bag with the fidlock mounts lifting the bag above the top tube, it’s not all that noticeable while riding. The bag has ample space to fit a day’s worth of snacks, or a full repair kit including a pump. I give Stealth a big thumbs up for being original and innovative.

Miles’ thoughts: The Top Tube Bag is the first product by Sturdy Bag Designs that I’ve used, and I’m happy to report that the name matches the quality. It’s a clean and well made bag that holds firmly in place while riding trails, and the included foam spacer is a nice touch. I found it a touch small for today’s gigantic cell phones, but it’s perfect for smaller gadgets and snacks that you want close by.

Top Tube Bag Stabilizers
Most top tube bags use velcro and webbing straps to secure to the top tube and steerer tube, and while this works fine in most scenarios, there are some cases when using a dedicated stabilizer can help. Adding a top tube bag stabilizer is a good workaround for short stems and a lack of headset spacers, providing a spot to attach the front of the top tube bag when traditional straps won’t work. Back in 2017, Drj0n was the first to offer a solution with their DeWidget, but there are now a number of other options from brands like Rockgeist and 76 Projects that can help create a wiggle-free setup. We’ve tested and shared our thoughts on some of the most popular options here.
Final Thoughts
Long story short, there are loads of great top tube bag options out there that are a perfect addition to any bikepacking setup without being overkill for day rides and commuting. It’s exciting to see bag makers differentiate their designs with unique features, new attachment systems, and unbelievable capacity.
Miles’ Thoughts: Up until recently, I gave up on top tube bags all together. I valued a clean top tube over the relatively limited packing space they offer. That was until bag makers started catching on with a number of oversized offerings that could carry enough baked goods to make them seem worthwhile to me. Recently, I’ve been turning to JPak’s Footlong SnakPak for all my top tube duties. Although its size won’t be everyone, I’m a fan.
Logan’s Thoughts: I try to maintain a pretty clean cockpit these days without using any accessory bags. However, on almost every long trip I take, I use a top tube bag. The placement and access is perfect for items that you need to keep at hand, and unlike “feed bags,” they generally don’t get in the way of mounting a GPS unit or your knees. Speaking of electronics, while most bikepackers utilize the convenient placement of a top tube bag for snacks, I often find myself stowing cables, headphones, sunglasses, my phone, and a headlamp in this position. I have two favorites that I regularly use: the Revelate MagTank and the Oveja Negra Snack Pack (XL), but I tried the Ortlieb Cockpit-Pack on a recent long trip and really appreciated having a fully waterproof safe haven at the ready for afternoon showers.
