The Marin Pine Mountain is part of the brand’s “Adventure” collection and the only steel hardtail in their entire lineup. It saw a major redesign in 2020 that included a record number of threaded eyelets, more progressive geometry, and their own moto-style “Bedroll Handlebar.” Since Logan’s review, the Pine Mountain has continued to stand out as a well-priced entry level bikepacking bike and has received some promising updates over the years that address a few of the concerns he voiced in his review.
The 2023 Marin Pine Mountain is still a Chromoly steel hardtail based around 29 x 2.6″ tires, a 120mm travel fork, a wide-range 1x drivetrain, and enough mounts to make you dizzy. Compared to the 2020 version Logan tested, the latest version has been updated with a longer reach, slightly slacker head tube, and a touch more stack. This year, there are two builds/frame colors to choose from: the entry level Pine Mountain 1 and the upgraded Pine Mountain 2. Find details on both below.
2023 Marin Pine Mountain 2
The Marin Pine Mountain 2 features their Series 3 Chromoly steel frame, thru-axles, RockShox FS 35 fork, a Shimano SLX 12-speed drivetrain, Shimano MT520 brakes, TranzX dropper post, and Vee Tire Flow Snap 29 x 2.6″ tires. It’s listed for $2,399 USD and comes in four sizes.
2023 Marin Pine Mountain 1
The more affordable Pine Mountain 1 features a Series 2 Chromoly steel frame, Shimano Deore 11-speed drivetrain, Shimano MT400 Hydraulic brakes, RockShox Recon RL fork, a rigid seatpost, and the same Vee Tire Flow Snap 29 x 2.6″ tires as its higher-end sibling. The Pine Mountain 1 costs $1,499 USD and comes in a Gloss Grey/Silver paint job.
