The Surly Big Easy electric cargo bike was just updated with a redesigned frame, new tech, and improved stability, making it a real contender for family bikepacking and as a car replacement. Learn more and watch Surly’s launch video here…

The Surly Big Easy a long-tail electric cargo bike “designed to expand what’s possible by bike,” as Surly puts it. It’s meant to ride and feel like a normal bike, with an upright and comfortable riding position, swept-back bars, and 26 x 2.5″ tires for a smooth ride over varied terrain.

The Big Easy just received a major update for 2024 that makes it look even more appealing as a car replacement, big-payload hauler, or family bikepacking rig. It’s still built around a double-butted Chromoly steel frame and has been redesigned with a lower standover height, a lower battery position, more mounting points, and boost hub spacing with thru-axles.

The 2024 Big Easy comes equipped with a dropper post to accommodate more riders across the three frame sizes, four-piston Tektro hydraulic brakes, and Surly’s updated Big Dummy bags. It features a damping headset for smooth and stable handling under heavy loads, can run dual batteries for extended range, has an integrated dual-leg kickstand mount, and uses a Bosch Performance Line Cargo drive unit.

It’s a Class 1 e-bike, meaning it is pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and has a maximum assisted speed of 20 miles per hour. It comes as a complete build with a Bosch PowerPack 725Wh battery, Bosch 4A Charger, and a 9-speed Shimano Cues drivetrain. It has a gross payload of 400 pounds total (including rider and cargo).
