Next Friday, hundreds of riders will take off from Banff, Alberta, in Canada, for the 2025 Tour Divide along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. The official 2025 route was recently made available for download. Find it here…
June 12th Update: The 2025 Tour Divide route was just updated to the V2 version, which includes a new 1.5 mile section of singletrack, the San Vicente Creek Trail, just south of Silver City, due to a closure and private property dispute on the original rail bed alignment. The map has been updated below.
The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR), developed and mapped by Adventure Cycling Association in 1997, is approximately 2,700 miles long and is considered by many to be the birthplace of bikepacking as a sport. Debuting in 2018, the Tour Divide is an annual self-supported race following the GDMBR, from just north of the Canada/US border in Banff, Alberta, to the US/Mexico border in Antelope Wells, New Mexico.
Despite being an “unofficial” bikepacking event, there are some rules and guidelines laid out on the slightly outdated Tour Divide website that all participants must adhere to. The clock runs non-stop, riders must ride unsupported between towns and self-supported in towns, only using commercially available lodging, food, and supplies that everyone can access. The route follows the GDMBR, but there are permitted deviations and slight changes from year to year. Scott Morris, creator of Trackleaders, just released the 2025 Tour Divide route files, and they are available to download from TopoFusion.com. We’ve also added the route to our Ride with GPS routes database to make things easy for anyone navigating with RWGPS.
So, what’s new for 2025? Not much! Here’s what Scott had to say about the 2025 route: “There’s a new gravel route added north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The route now skips Sand Mountain and stays lower, but is ~10 miles longer. The route eliminates 15 miles of highway riding and also skips the descent where Dave Blumenthal was hit and killed by a motorist in the 2010 Tour Divide.”
All in all, the route is 2,681 miles long with 158,087 feet of elevation gain. Justinas Leveika’s 2024 record stands at 13 days, 2 hours, and 16 minutes (13:02:16), and we’re eager to see who might be taking at a run at it for 2025. Stay tuned for tons of in-depth coverage from the 2025 Tour Divide!
