Afuera is a documentary following Alvin Escajeda as he takes on the fifth edition of the Trans Pyrenees Race in Spain. The race is a self-supported ultra-distance cycling event that traverses the Pyrenees from coast to coast and back again. The video, which is beautifully shot and edited by his partner and accomplished videographer, Ginger Boyd, explores both Alvin’s literal journey through 2,000 kilometers of European countryside and the evolution of his identity. From race tactics and the mentality needed to finish such a massive effort, to the personal struggles that come to the fore of Alvin’s mind in what is such a physically taxing effort, Afuera does an excellent job of displaying the raw emotion of his experience.
As a Mexican-American, Alvin cites his cultural identity as one of “no place.” He’s neither from here nor from there. Neither Mexican enough, nor American enough. Afuera documents the struggles and growth of pushing to a competitive 13th-place finish while Alvin discusses the transformation of seeing his lack of concrete identity as a weakness into a strength. Noting that his ability to feel discomfort as a person of mixed identity helps him in the darkest and most grueling moments of the race. It’s a fantastic video that blends the best elements of route documentation with a personal story that can resonate anywhere.
