Chinese brand Fire Maple’s new Petrel Pour-Over Kettle is a lightweight, modular kettle designed for discerning hikers and bikepackers who take their morning coffee a little too seriously. Take a look at the feature-rich $33 boiler here…
Although I wasn’t familiar with Fire Maple, a Chinese brand founded in 2003 and focused on lightweight stoves and cookware, I was successfully targeted by an ad the other day, and I admit I’m intrigued by what I found. Fire Maple’s latest product is the clever 350ml Petrel Pour-Over Kettle, which looks ideal for carefully brewing up a single cup of coffee at camp. Built from a mix of aluminum alloy and stainless steel and weighing just 126 grams (4.5 ounces), it boasts several features that enable it to boil quickly, brew precisely, and pack down into a compact package.
A first that I’ve seen, the Petrel has a removable threaded gooseneck spout (and handle) that can be stored inside when not in use. A heat-exchanger base with integrated fins helps maximize the flame surface area to reduce boil time and conserve fuel, and a 350ml (11.8 fluid ounce) capacity with stamped measurement gradients is roughly ideal for a single cup. The whole system packs down to an impressive 3.6 x 3.4 x 4.7 inches and weighs less than a small isobutane canister.
No doubt, a larger pot or kettle is more versatile for general cooking and boiling at camp, but this looks like a worthy little piece of kit for rides where brewing a cup is your primary focus or when you don’t plan to cook anything else. I like to pack a pre-made burrito for simple overnighters close to home, no need to cook anything else, and could see this making its way into my collection of coffee-making gear if I hadn’t sworn off adding to it this year.
The Petrel Pour-Over Kettle costs $32.95 and is available now from FireMapleGear.com.
