Making its debut on Kickstarter earlier this month, the Flock Light is designed to illuminate your legs while you ride, and the makers say it helps you be seen more than five times sooner than with traditional tail lights. Find details and a link to the campaign here…
Recently launched on Kickstarter by founders Tim Ottaway and Marie Penny in Melbourne, Australia, the Flock Light is a new tail light for cyclists that uses biomotion—the motion of living things—to help capture the attention of drivers. In addition to shining light backward like a traditional light would, it works by also casting light down onto your legs as you pedal, highlighting your human motion to help you be seen (and recognized) more quickly.
The founders say the Flock Light is a better alternative than simply strapping on a brighter light because our brains recognize the shape of a person 5.5 times faster from their biomotion than from a static bright light. The Flock Light has already won several international design awards, and it’s now available for purchase exclusively through Kickstarter.
In addition to its unique biomotion lighting system, the Flock Light also features a battery gauge level, an easy one-handed clip and release mount for attaching and removing it from your bike, and four modes that allow for day and night visibility. Depending on your selected setting, runtimes range from three hours in Biomotion Mode up to 200+ hours in Eco Mode. It charges via USB-C, weighs just 47 grams, has an IPX5 waterproof rating, and attaches to all seatposts.
Early bird pricing is $102 AUD ($72 USD) for a single light with mounting/charging accessories. At the time of posting, the project has received just over $40,500 from 526 backers, with 15 days to go.
