Following the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was handcuffed and had his neck pinned under the knee of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for nearly nine minutes after reportedly trying to use a counterfeit $20 bill, our friends Brian and Alicia at Hoot Ventures are raffling off a set of handmade Munchie Bags and a Bum Bag as a fundraiser for the Minnesota Freedom Fund. All proceeds will go directly to the group, a community based nonprofit that’s working to combat the harms of incarceration by paying bail for low-income individuals who can’t otherwise afford it.

The pricing structure is as follows: 1 ticket – $10; 3 tickets – $25; 8 tickets – $50. The raffle ends at midnight on Monday, June 1st, and the winner will be contacted by Tuesday evening. I’m buying tickets, and encourage everyone who is able to do the same. You can enter the raffle here.

If you’re looking for other ways to show your support, here’s a short list of groups who need help to fight racial injustice in the Twin Cities and beyond, now more than ever:

Update: As of May 31st, the Minnesota Freedom Fund reported that it has been overwhelmed by over $20 million in small and large donations, and they’ve requested that folks who are looking to donate now support other organizations instead. As such, Brian and Alicia from Hoot Ventures are working to identify a new community-based nonprofit group to support with the proceeds from this raffle.
