The new Llum dynamo light was born through a collaboration between the machinists at C²industrie and titanium framebuilder Caminade. The idea was to provide a dynamo-powered light and charger that was equivalent to US-made options but manufactured in France. Llum means “light” in Catalan, a Romance language from the Neo-Latin group in Spain, which is where the owners originate from. The first production run was manufactured just seven kilometers away from their workshop—the distance needed to recharge a smartphone battery by five percent.
The Llum dynamo light uses an internal capacitor to smooth the flow of energy, allowing low-speed charging and light output. An internal battery also allows the main light and red lateral lights to remain on while stopped for up to five minutes, which can be helpful for setting up camp or route-finding in the dark.
The light has an impressive number of outputs and inputs. There is a USB-A 5V output to charge a smartphone or external battery pack, a USB-C connection to power the light using an external battery pack, a 6V tail light output for use in charge mode, an additional a 6V tail light output for use in light mode, as well as an coaxial-style 5-100V AC dynamo input. There’s a switch on the back to toggle between charge and light mode; a 6x10mm mounting tab that’s compatible with Supernova, B&M, and other hardware,; red visibility lights on each side; and, of course, the main 750 lumen headlight. Its 750-lumens output is right on par with the popular Sinewave Beacon but far less powerful than the kLite Ultra at 1,300 lumens.
According to the makers, the Llum light kicks in at just 4 km/hour with 700 x 45mm wheels/tires, and the charger starts at 9 km/hour with 700 x 45mm wheels/tires. Both of these specs are quite impressive when compared against some other popular dynamo lights on the market.
The Llum is safe in rain and dust thanks to its IP54 rating. The team behind it prioritized repairability and ability to dismantle the light rather than fully waterproof construction. Since the body isn’t assembled using any type of glue or epoxy, it can be opened up and repaired in the event that something needs fixing. The case in machined from aluminum, the lower mounting bracket is removable and reversible, and the unit weighs just 180 grams.
The Llum comes in grey or black and costs €349 (~$375 USD). Lights are in stock as of today and can be purchased directly from Llum.Caminade.eu.
