Starting next year, Klean Kanteen will be transitioning to certified 90% post-consumer recycled stainless steel for all of its classic and insulated bottles. Learn more about the brand’s move toward recycled steel here…

We’re big fans of using durable, long-lasting gear for bikepacking. Plastic water bottles, while lightweight and cheap to replace, don’t last nearly as long as stainless steel options, which is why we’ve always been big fans of Klean Kanteen’s steel product line. Their wide-mouth 40oz and massive 64oz single-wall water bottles make a great option for anyone looking to carry more water. Plus, they hold up extremely well to being strapped under a downtube, smashed against rocks, and can even be used on stove if push comes to shove.

Klean Kanteen just announced their plan to start making their products with certified 90% post-consumer recycled 18/8 stainless steel starting in 2022. It’s a big step forward for the brand, which is Climate Neutral Certified, a long-standing Certified B-Corporation, and a 1% For the Planet Member that has donated $3.3 million and counting to organizations dedicated to protecting the environment. The use of certified recycled steel instead of virgin steel will extend the life of raw materials and will result in a 40% reduction in Klean Kanteen’s steel greenhouse gas emissions, a 30% reduction in energy demand, and a 60-80% reduction in ecosystem impacts.

Klean Kanteen products made with certified recycled stainless steel will roll out in a phased launch online and in-store. Starting in Spring 2022, Klean Kanteen will begin manufacturing its TKWide and Straw lines using certified recycled stainless steel. In Summer 2022, the Classic and Vacuum Insulated Classic collections will make the switch. And by 2023, 95% of Klean Kanteen products will be made from certified recycled stainless steel.
