While a lot has changed since we reviewed the Velo Orange Piolet back in 2016, it’s still a rugged steel off-road tourer at heart, and we don’t expect that will ever change. According to Velo Orange it’s “built it to be sturdy, simple, and very capable” with clearance for 26 x 2.4″ (size small) or 29 x 2.4″ / 27.5 x 2.8″ (medium to extra-large). It’s based around a 4130 Chromoly steel frame and matching fork; has loads of mounting points for racks, bags, fenders, and whatever else you may need; and can play nicely with both drop bars and flat bars, depending on your preference.
The latest Piolet now comes with 12 x 142/100mm thru-axles, a new triple-butted steel fork with a 1 1/8″ threadless steerer, and an eye-catching Metallic Moss paint job. The fit and geometry have remained unchanged, it maintains three sets of bottle mounts on the frame as well as triple pack pack mounts on the fork legs, and it still uses a replaceable stainless steel derailleur hanger.
Velo Orange is offering special pre-order pricing for anyone thinking of picking up a new frame. From now until August 28th, you have the chance to secure a frameset for $795 instead of its regular price of $925. Expected delivery is early September. Head over to Velo-Orange.com to learn more.
