Just announced, after more than 30 years, Onza Tires has announced the new Porcupine tire. Read on to learn more about this high-grip, all rounder, based on the popular characteristics from tires of the 90s…

The Onza Porcupine, a tire of the 90s, was known for it’s massive grippy tread and solid overall performance. Announced today, Onza is brining back the past by reintroducing the Porcupine into their current line of mountain bike tires—but this time a little less porcupine-y. Although the new tire has seen a complete redesign, the Porcupine still shares some of the same characteristics, offering large side lugs, a continuous centre channel, and potentially good dirt-shedding properties. Onza also claims a low rolling resistance, although comparatively speaking, the Porcupine doesn’t look like our first choice for speed (outside of fast descents, and chunky terrain). However, those tackling challenging singletrack-heavy bikepacking routes may want to take a closer look.

The Porcupine is offered in a standard black casing or a tan-wall, plus a full white casing and tread version, harkening back to its roots. All Porcupine tires are tubeless-ready, feature a medium (60a) or soft (50a) compound, and come in either 60TPI or 120TPI casings in the wider formats. There are 12 different Porcupine options, in both 27.5 and 29 sizes, ranging from 2.4″ to 2.6″ in width. Check out Onza’s launch video below…
