Earlier this week, Neil published his video and article about rebuilding his layering system, sharing details on what gear made the cut. Among the keepers was the Outdoor Research Helium Jacket, an ultralight rain jacket that is equally loved and loathed for its emergency-level waterproofing and impressively lightweight design. As it happens, Outdoor Research just announced its new Helium UL collection, which is claimed to be “lighter, more weatherproof, and more packable than ever.”

The collection includes the new Helium UL Jacket in both men’s and women’s sizing, Helium UL Gaiters, Helium UL Rain Mitts, a Helium UL Bivy, and an optional vestibule add-on for the bivy. According to their website, Helium UL Rain Pants are coming soon. For now, let’s focus on the Helium UL Rain Jacket.

The Outdoor Research Helium UL Rain Jacket features a list of upgrades, including a new Toray Dermizax 3D 2.75-layer construction, a total weight of 162 grams (size medium), a new wire-brim hood that should offer more structure, shaped cuffs, and drawcords in the hem and hood. According to the website, the new fabric should provide at least a 20,000mm waterproof rating, but the breathability rating isn’t given. The Helium UL jacket comes in four colors in both men’s and women’s sizes, and it’s priced at $225 USD, making it the most expensive Helium jacket yet.
