Just launched via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the new Tenkara Rod Co. Backpackr Rod is a unique three-length fly fishing rod that’s designed to be packable yet functional. The Backpackr breaks down to just 13.5 inches (34 centimeters), weighs just 80 grams (2.8 ounces), and expands to three fishing lengths: 330cm (10’10”), 360cm (11’10”), and 390cm (12’10”) thanks to a precision-engineered triple zoom system.

Manufactured in Korea, the rod is made from a high-tensile Korean carbon fiber and fiberglass composite, offering an optimal balance of flex, durability, and strength. The handle features high-grade cork for a secure, tactile grip in wet or dry conditions. The rod is tuned for a “mid flex action” that Tenkara Rod Co. says “offers the responsiveness of a faster rod with the smooth presentation and forgiveness of a slower taper. This makes it especially effective for both short-range tight water and longer, more delicate drifts.”

After extensive field testing, the Backpackr Rod is launching via Kickstarter today, and there are a few ways to support the project. The early bird pricing for the rod only is $225 (limited quantities). The Backpackr Kit includes the rod, rock sock, rod tube, line, flies, and more and costs $249. The standard Kickstarter pricing for these are $249 and $265, respectively. Rods are expected to be delivered to backers by September 2025.
