Released back in 2019, the third installment of Outskirts follows brothers Lachlan and Gus Morton on an incredible ride across the Balkans, starting in Montenegro and ending in Turkey. The film’s entertaining characters, precarious route, and great soundtrack make it well worth a watch…

I’m not sure how I completely missed it when it was released nearly two years ago, but the YouTube algorithm recently suggested I watch Outskirts 3: The Shadow of the East, a 70-minute documentary from Rapha and Thereabouts that follows professional racer Lachlan Morton and his brother Angus on a seven-country, 1,600-kilometer journey across the Balkan Penninsula, from Montenegro to Turkey. Having spent around four months bikepacking through the Balkans myself, it’s a region that’s near and dear to my heart, and one I hope to return to in a post-lockdown world. So, I couldn’t help but be completely engrossed by the film, watching it all the way through in one go.

Throughout their ride, the brothers traverse some of the region’s incredibly challenging roads, experience warm local hospitality, happen upon cultural gems, and are joined by a charismatic special guest for part of their trip. And, of course, things go wrong in hilarious ways from the very beginning. Watch the full film below, followed by a selection of images from Sami Sauri.

“It’s not the destination, it’s not the feat itself that’s important for us… it’s what goes on on the road that shapes the journey and gives it purpose.”
