The Highland Trail is a self-supported 550-mile mountain bike route with more than 16,000 meters of climbing. For over ten years, the annual grand depart has attracted riders from all over the world and has become a classic bikepacking event. The route travels through some of Scotland’s most beautiful and remote terrain, heading far to the north and back along the coast on the way down. Although stunning, the terrain is often technical and slow going at times, with a suggested “tour” speed of around 14 days; some of the fastest racers complete the full route in under 4 days, which is incredible.

The 2024 Highland Trail 550 grand depart took off from the village of Tyndrum on Saturday morning, and the fastest riders are already well over the halfway point. Sour Bicycles’ team rider Quinda Verheul is around the 300-mile mark, sitting in the top 30 riders out of nearly 70 who signed up and in the top four in the women’s category. Before the race, Sour Bicycles met up with Quinda Verheul to learn more about her prototype full-suspension Sour and the bags/gear she’s using. Watch the short rig check video they put together below:

We should see our first Highland Trail 550 finisher within the next day or two. You can follow along live here.
