British outdoor gear and apparel brand Rab just launched its debut collection of gear aimed at the bikepacking market, the Cinder range, which builds on their decades of experience in designing clothing for all-weather performance and comfort. With both men’s and women’s lines, the new Cinder collection features more than 30 styles in a variety of colors, including waterproof tops and bottoms, jerseys, pants, shorts, cargo bibs, casual wear, and more.
The Cinder range includes some updates to existing pieces from the Rab lineup as well a number fresh additions to their catalog. Of note, they’ve introduced a Cinder version of their award-winning, featherlight Phantom Jacket (which I recognized in my 2022 Editor’s Dozen gear picks) that features a silicone grip drop hem, ride-refined sleeves, and a frame attachable stuff sack. Rab also included Cinder versions of their waterproof Kinetic jacket, pants, and shorts that are tailored with pedaling articulation in mind.
Browsing through the new Cinder collection online, it’s clear that Rab has steered this initial release toward the performance end of the cycling spectrum, with many items appearing to have to trimmer fit designed for maximum on-bike performance, which inevitably comes at the cost of the more casual fit and aesthetic many long-distance bikepackers prefer for comfort during the hours spent hanging around camp, resupplying in towns, etc. As such, a good number of the items in the Cinder range may be better suited to ultra-racing or day riding than loaded touring, but there are at least a handful of new pieces that look to have potential as versatile pieces for a wide range of riding pursuits.
