Following the release of their M7200/M6200 mechanical groupsets, Shimano has expanded its drivetrain options with the DEORE XT M8200 mechanical groupset. Featuring three new shifters and two rear derailleurs, this update brings their new SHADOW ES clutch technology to a practical, fully mechanical drivetrain. Read on below…
Unlike the expansive changes to the systems Miles covered earlier this week, the new Shimano DEORE XT M8200 mechanical drivetrains feature just two major component updates: shifters and derailleurs. Among other changes, the DEORE XT M8200 has a redesigned cage that Shimano says adds ground clearance while maintaining gear range with both long- and mid-cage derailleur options. Let’s dive into the specifics of each to see where they differ.
RD-M8200 Derailleur
The M8200 features the brand’s new SHADOW ES cage technology, which uses a dual-spring design with increased spring force for shifting precision and chain tension on rough terrain. Made of aluminum alloy, this derailleur has a new, slimmer stabilizer mechanism, two cage options, and solid pulley construction. The long cage RD-M8200 SGS is meant for use with 12-speed, 10-51T cassettes. The mid-cage RD-M8200 GS is designed for use with 12-speed 9-45T cassettes. Both cage options are compatible with their wider, 12-speed HYPERGLIDE+ component ecosystem. The RD-M8200 weighs 370 grams, has between a 9-11T minimum and 45-51T maximum depending on the chosen cage, and retails for $170.
RD-M8230 Derailleur
The main difference with the RD-M8230 derailleur is that it’s designed for 11-speed LINKGLIDE systems rather than 12-speed HYPERGLIDE+ systems. It uses the same Shimano SHADOW ES clutch technology, but features just one long-cage variant, the RD-M8230 SGS, for use with 11-speed 11-50T LINKGLIDE cassettes. While the weight for this model isn’t available yet, it has a 50T max capacity and an 11T minimum, and it retails for $170.
SL-M8200, SL-M8210, and SL-M8230 Shifters
Accompanying the new M8200 derailleur are three trigger shifters. The SL-M8200 can handle up to three shifts in a single stroke of the main lever. It also comes with a replaceable rubber traction pad, is compatible with prior Shimano 12-speed drivetrain options, and has a variety of clamp band options. The SL-M8210 is made specifically for e-bikes and differs in that it’s single-shift only to protect the cassette by reducing non-gated shifts. The SL-M8230 is their 11-speed LINKGLIDE option, and is capable of up to two shifts with the main lever. All of the shifters are equipped with Shimano’s RAPIDFIRE PLUS shifting, which allows riders to shift three cogs up the cassette, into harder gears, in just one shift. All of these shifters retail for $85.
