Shimano has announced two new flat pedals, the Saint and Deore XT. Built for durability, grip, and confidence in downhill trail riding, both sets of pedals feature a sizeable platform, impact-resistant pins, and a construction they say will hold up to the most demanding terrain. Let’s dive into the specifics of each pedal to see where they differ.
Shimano Saint PD-G8040
The Shimano Saint PD-G8040 flat pedals draw on the brand’s gravity-focused heritage. They include an extra-wide, dual-concave platform with a resin pedal body, supposedly best for skidding off rocks, roots, and other obstacles. Built with a reinforced alloy pedal body, composite skid plate, and impact-resistant pins, the PD-G8040 is engineered to withstand repeated impacts and hard riding. The Saint pedal is also completely rebuildable, with readily available replacement parts.
The Shimano Saint pedal has a 121mm x 110mm platform, 10 traction pins per side, 4 optional inner pin positions, 6mm and 3mm pins, plus a dedicated E5 socket wrench pin tool. It is fully serviceable, with replacement parts available. The Saint pedals weigh 393 grams and retail for $225.

Shimano Deore XT PD-M8240
The Shimano Deore XT PD-M8240 flat pedals deliver a similar level of performance to the higher Saint pedals, but at a lower cost. Like the Saint pedals, they feature a wide, dual-concave platform, a thin pedal body without any protrusion from the axle, and reinforced pedal bodies and impact-resistant pins. The Deore XT pedals, however, do not have a resin-skid-plate outer construction.
The Deore XT pedals have a 121mm x 110mm wide platform, 10 traction pins per side with 2 optional inner pin positions, included 6mm and 3mm pins, plus a dedicated E5 socket wrench pin tool, a forged alloy pedal body, impact-resistant traction pins, and are fully serviceable with replacement parts. The pedals weigh 423 grams and retail for $175.
