The new Six Moon Designs Lunar Orbiter Tent has two vestibules, offers plenty of space for one person and their gear, and is the brand’s first freestanding tent. Dig into the details on their latest shelter here…

Oregon’s Six Moon Designs was founded by Ron Moak in 2002 because he couldn’t find an affordable, lightweight shelter for backpacking that he liked. The product line has grown to include several shelters, hiking backpacks, and ultralight umbrellas. Bikepackers have used their tents for years, and we’ve reviewed both the Deschutes Tarp and Lunar Solo Shelter, but up until now, there hasn’t been a freestanding option in their lineup.

The new Six Moon Designs Lunar Orbiter one-person tent breaks tradition with a fully freestanding design, two large vestibules and doors, and a lightweight silpoly construction. The setup relies on a classic X-shaped exoskeleton pole structure with sleeves at the apex and clips toward each corner. It uses a single-wall design with 20D No-See-Um Mesh walls and a bathtub style floor. There are two interior pockets and a removable gear loft, and while no stakes are required for setup, the doorways (and additional guylines) can be staked out for extra stability.

The Lunar Orbiter has a 90 x 44″ (228 x 112cm) floor area, a 48″ (121cm) high point inside the tent, and two 16-square-foot vestibules. The tent and poles pack down into a 15.5″ (40cm) package but are stored in separate storage bags that are 4″ and 2″ in diameter, respectively. The tent, including stakes, poles, and stuff sack, weighs 2 pounds and 12 ounces (1,255 grams), which is light but not the lightest we’ve seen. To offer a few comparisons, that’s 270 grams heavier than the new Durston X-Dome 1+ and almost the exact same weight at the SlingFin Portal 1 Neil reviewed (and loves).

The Lunar Orbiter Tent costs $425 USD, which is comparable to other popular tents like the Big Agnes Copper Spur, SlingFin Portal 1, Nemo Dragonfly Osmo 1, and Mountain Hardwear Nimbus UL1. Learn more over at SixMoonDesigns.com.
