Our friends at the WTF Bikexplorers—whose mission is to support, celebrate, and connect communities who identify as non-binary, transgender, femme, and/or women who use their bicycles to explore—are currently trying to raise $10,000 to go toward five scholarships that will help lessen the financial and material barriers to travel by bicycle.

Today, they’re asking for the cycling community’s help to expand funding for the SJ Brooks Scholarship program. Their goal for 2020 is to award five individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) with $2,000 to go toward a bicycle adventure of their choosing.

We recognize that the outside is not free. The freedom and access that many cyclists enjoy are not an experience equally shared by BIPOC, queer, and trans riders. This rings true, now just as ever with social inequality and systemic racism persisting against the backdrop of a pandemic. These injustices and inequalities have persisted so much longer than this current moment and we recognize that there is much work that can be done on our part to create more safe, accessible, and inclusive spaces and opportunities for these communities.”

All donations will go directly toward recipients, and we encourage all of our readers who are able to make a donation via the SJ Brooks Scholarship GoFundMe. They’re also seeking gear donations from cycling/outdoor companies that can help outfit awardees. As of posting, they’re already almost halfway to their goal, but the more money they raise, the more BIPOC riders they can support.

Applications will be accepted from Wednesday, July 29, 2020, to Saturday, Aug 15, 2020, and selected applicants will be notified by Tuesday, Aug 25, 2020. Find additional details via the GoFundMe link above. And stay tuned, as we’ll be sure to share their official announcement as soon applications are open next month.
