DISPATCH: Just released, the new Specialized S-Works Recon Lace Gravel Shoes feature the performance-first design approach that’s the norm for the high-dollar S-Works collection, plus a clean and timeless lace-up closure. Check them out here…

My first experience with lace-up clipless shoes was the Bontrager GR2 Gravel, which quickly proved to be one of the most comfortable cycling shoes I’ve used. I believe a supple upper and lace-up closure is the key to the GR2’s comfort, and both Lucas and I have gotten along with them quite well (see our review here). This leads me to the new Specialized S-Works Recon Lace Gravel Shoes—a lace-up version of their performance-oriented Recon Gravel and Cross-Country Shoes. Although they retail for more than double what the Bontrager GR2s cost, they look like they might make a great all-purpose performance bikepacking shoe.

S-Works Recon Lace

The S-Works Recon Lace Gravel Shoes are the latest addition to the (astonishingly expensive) S-Works lineup. They use Specialized’s stiffest and lightest XC FACT carbon plate shank, their SlipNot rubber heel and toe tread for traction on all types of terrain, and their Form Fit last with a roomy toe box for all-day comfort. You won’t find any fancy BOA dials or ratchets, though, as they rely on a simple and timeless lace-up closure with an integrated lace-keeper. Watch Specialized’s short highlight video below.
