German brand Tout Terrain is shaking things up with today’s announcement of its debut drailleur-based 29er, the Catalina, which is also its first model offered as a standalone frame kit. Learn more about the new Pinion-less Tout Terrain Catalina steel hardtail here…

Teased at this year’s Sea Otter Classic (find our coverage here), the Tout Terrain Catalina is a new hardtail 29er that ditches the Pinion drive for a rear derailleur. It’s designed to maintain the German brand’s key pillars of capability, long-distance comfort, and long-term durability while offering a nimbler feel for afternoon laps on fast, flowy trails. Its powder-coated Thermocrom frame features top tube bosses, two bottle mounts, downtube bosses, and rack mounts, making it ready for double duty as a bikepacking rig. A 120mm suspension fork balances sporty agility with readiness for multi-day missions.

In a Tout Terrain first, the Catalina is offered as a standalone frame kit. It can be delivered as a frame-only option or with a Tout Terrain Adventure II Carbon Rigid Fork or a RockShox Reba Gold 3P Crown B1 suspension fork. It’s offered in four sizes, from small to extra-large, in buyer’s choice of color. Frames are $1,625 (€1,300), and the rigid and suspension frame kits are $2,274 and $2,174, respectively.

The Catalina is inspired by the Outback, Tout Terrain’s flat-bar Pinion adventure bike, which Josh and I reviewed last year, but it’s tweaked for trail riding with 30mm shorter chainstays and a lower weight. Beyond dropper routing, it adds internal cable routing, a threaded bottom bracket, and Tout Terrain’s Ergo-Stop II steering stopper on top of the head tube, plus a small, forged “TT” on the chainstays—a unique touch. Its measurements are quite compact and conservative across the board. You can browse the full geometry chart below.
