We’re deep into winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, but that didn’t stop people from our growing global community from getting out for for a spin over the weekend. We zoom in on three rides from our readers in today’s installment of Weekend Snapshot, which highlights an overnighter in the California desert, a gloomy ride along the coast in British Columbia, and a pleasant jaunt through the forest in South Carolina. I recently went out for a 57-mile overnighter on the Ranchita Rambler to remind myself that riding to spend just one night outside always counts. December is my favorite month to be in my local desert, Anza Borrego, and it was a pleasure to descend nearly 20 miles and 3,500 feet to the desert floor and watch the flora shift from white sage and juniper to ocotillo and cholla. I treated myself to a veggie burrito in town and pedaled well past sunset to bivy between creosote in Palm Canyon. I woke up to the sun illuminating some of my favorite peaks of the San Ysidros, packed up, and climbed out of the desert on sandy roads feeling grateful to squeeze my favorite elements of bikepacking into a winter overnighter.

Winter on the coast has some pretty uninspiring weather. Maybe it was the buzz of the new year or the simple fact that we wanted to spend time with our pals, but we managed to grind through 50 kilometres in the rain and fog. An oddball mix of schedules makes getting out together difficult, but we made the most of the day with lakeside Baileys and hot chocolate, homemade shortbread, and out-of-tune Christmas carols.
