Alberta, Canada

By Bryce Webster (@webstar999)

My regular partner-in-bikepacking-crime and I had been talking about trying a winter overnighter for a couple of months. After one failed attempt in December, the forecast bid us back into the woods. We’re blessed with some crown land close to home, with a gravel road that cuts right through the middle. It’s made even better by the fact it’s plowed for service vehicle access but closed to regular vehicles in the winter months. With heavily laden fatbikes, we meandered back into some ATV trails that crisscross the area. Around 7 p.m., we saw the last of the OHV users clear out, and we enjoyed the quiet of a surprisingly warm January evening.

Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, Australia

By Stuart Potter (@oldsteelguy)

A fantastic three-day bikepacking adventure in Kosciuszko with a full flavour profile of memories that included bog trotting, sunset chasing, historic huts, scary spiders, lost shoes, heroic sandals, river crossings, wild brumbies (horses), and wonderful views. We took the riding at our own pace to make sure we had time to really take in every bit of the trip.

Lincolnshire, UK

By Rob Thwaites (@rob.thwaites_bearbait)

After a month of midwinter inactivity and one of the cloudiest Decembers on record in the UK, I eagerly grabbed the opportunity of a couple of sunny days for a spin round my local gravel loop. A lack of fitness and some heavy going saw me trimming my planned distance to a more managable 40 miles to camp among copse of oaks alongside the trail. A bright, crisp day awaited me the following morning, but I lingered in my bag a while longer enjoying a second cup of coffee, in no rush to face the prospect of the numb fingers that I knew awaited me. Forty miles later, I wheeled my mud-caked bike into the garage, tired but totally rejuvenated. There really is power in an overnighter.
