Our 80th installment of Weekend Snapshot zooms in on reader-submitted bikepacking trips in Spain, Australia, and New Mexico. Find an array of photos from long and short getaways through three unique corners of the globe and use the form to share an image from one of your recent rides here…
Today’s Weekend Snapshot captures some of the highs and lows of bikepacking, including the stunning backcountry vistas an off-road rig can take you to and the big climbs, harsh weather, and challenging terrain that often comes as a package deal with the experience. Three folks from our worldwide bikepacking community share scenes from their local rides today, and you can find images from three continents below. Once you’ve checked them out, be sure to keep scrolling to submit a photo of your own and find some related posts in the Further Reading grid.
Comunidad Valenciana, Spain
By Fernando Ballester (@fer_nandet)
A nighttime scene from a gravel route that crosses through three autonomous communities (Valencian Community, Aragon, and Catalonia), a natural park (Tinença de Benifassà), and a greenway (Val de Zafán Greenway). The overnight stay is at the abandoned hermitage of Sant Miquel de Espinalvà, located at the head of a small ravine that descends northward. It is a semicircular space, resembling an amphitheater, enclosed by steep slopes.
Valles Caldera, New Mexico
By Russ Willacker (@switzerlandtrail)
My riding buddy Ben and I tackled BIKEPACKING.com’s Valles Caldera Explorer v2.0 route in reverse. Things didn’t quite go as we’d hoped, but what a beautiful landscape. The hot springs were definitely the highlight, and the 1.25-mile, 2,300-foot climb was the deepest challenge of the weekend.
Flinders Ranges, South Australia
By Alex Cittadini
My friend Kyle and I completed 730 kilometres of the Mawson Trail unsupported. The trail reaches some remote areas of the Flinders Ranges and is largely dirt, gravel, and mud roads. It was our first bikepacking trip, and we battled sub-zero temperatures, literal gale force headwinds, and mud so thick and sticky it rendered the bikes unusable. An absolutely epic adventure!
Send Us Your Weekend Snapshot
We’ll be selecting three photos per week to feature in Weekend Snapshot. Send yours along for consideration, and if it’s selected, we’ll be in touch! Note: We prefer 3:2 ratio landscape-oriented photos.
