Just announced, Zipp’s new 303 Firecrest Wheels are lighter weight, wider, and more aerodynamic than the previous version. Find all the details, including photos and specs here…

Just launched, Zipp’s 303 Firecrest Wheels have been completely redesigned to perform better over varied terrain, gravel included. Besides being 300 grams lighter than the previous version, the 303 Firecrests are substantially wider as well, with a 25mm internal width that Zipp claims can handle tires from 28-55mm wide. The 40mm rim depth is said to add aero efficiency, and also means shorter (theoretically stronger) spokes—which is important considering the 24 spoke count. They are tubeless-specific, built around the new German-engineered ZR1 DB hubs, and are only available in a 700c diameter.

At first glance, they look like some promising gravel wheels. The 25mm internal width is great to see, which should be plenty to run a nice 29 x 2.0″ tire. The 24 spoke count definitely isn’t ideal for loaded bikepacking and rough gravel roads, but there aren’t that many 700c ‘gravel’ wheels to choose from, so it’s a step in the right direction.
