Jonas Deichmann Sets New North Cape to Cape Town Record

Congratulations to Jonas Deichmann, who recently set the new record for fastest time between North Cape, Norway, and Cape Town, South Africa, riding an extraordinary 18,000 kilometers in just over 72 days. Find details, photos, and a video overview of his bike here…

You may recall hearing the buzz around Jonas Deichmann this time last year when he set a new solo Pan-American record, riding 23,112 kilometers from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina, in just 97 days, 21 hours, and 10 minutes.

Jonas has been busy since then, and last Saturday, November 19th, he set a fresh record, becoming the fastest person ever to pedal from North Cape, Norway, to Cape Town, South Africa, in a remarkable 72 days, 7 hours and 27 minutes. That’s an average of 250 kilometers a day to connect the two cities, some 18,000 kilometers and 15 countries apart. And he shaved an entire month off the previous fastest time.

As a completely unsupported effort, Jonas was responsible for carrying all of his gear and supplies throughout his trip. According to Jonas, one of his biggest challenges was being able to find and haul his average daily intake of 10,000 calories, as was managing a supply of clean water in the extreme heat of the Sahara, Sudan, and Ethiopia.
