2022 GranGuanche Audax (Video)

The GranGuanche Audax is a self-supported bikepacking event across Spain’s Canary Islands. It’s 700 kilometers with 16,000 meters elevation of elevation gain over five islands connected by four ferries. Watch the official event recap video here…

An Audax is a long-distance group ride that challenges riders to finish within an established time limit. There are stories of these events popping up as early as the mid-1890s, but they only gained popularity in the UK during the 1970s. The GranGuanche Audax follows a fixed 700-kilometer route across five islands connected by four ferries. The time limit to ride every island is set by the ferry leaving for the next one. It’s a series of four audax challenges followed by a final sprint on the last island. This year’s event had 40 solo riders and nine pairs at the start, but only six of them would make it to all the ferries on time.
