We’re getting the band back together for the holidays. By band, we mean all of you. And by back together, we mean outdoors, all looking at the same stars for one last overnighter of the year. Building and fostering the bikepacking community has always been at the core of our mission. Two years ago, we created an event to do just that: bring all of us together in spirit, despite the fact that we’d collectively been separated for one hell of a challenging year when the COVID-19 pandemic had us all questioning everything.
Inspired by Rapha’s Festive 500—an annual campaign to motivate road cyclists to rack up 500 kilometers between Christmas and New Year’s Day—we came up with our own end-of-year challenge that’s accessible, bikepacking-friendly, and designed to encourage folks to venture into nature for a night within the same timeframe. It’s been quite popular in its first two years, so we’re keeping the ball rolling with Good Night 2022! This is an open invitation event that we hope will inspire our community to get out on a local, self-supported overnighter in the last week of the year to toast one another in spirit, sleep in open air, have a good night outdoors, and bid farewell to the year.
Rules
Rule #1
Camp out with your bike between December 25th and 31st.
No restrictions apply. Again this year, we’ve opened up the event to the last week of the year, from Saturday, December 25th, until the 31st (make it a New Year’s celebration, if you’d like!). We also welcome you to camp in your backyard, your porch, or wherever possible. Just make sure to follow rule number three below.
Rule #2
Keep it small and self-sufficient.
To keep impacts to a minimum, you may want to go solo or camp out in a small group. Carry everything you need, and keep it local. It’s all about maintaining our connection to the outdoors and reflecting on what comes next. Another idea is to meet a friend or friends from a nearby community at a rendezvous campsite.
Rule #3
Have a good night outside, and do it up!
Enjoy your night, preferably outdoors, but we understand if that’s not an option. Eat some good camp grub. Drink something tasty. Wear funny hats. Bring twinkly lights. Stare at a fire. Look at the stars. Reflect on the changes you made in 2022 and the lessons you’ve learned. Toast something or someone. Leave No Trace. And peace out, 2022!
