Grand Depart: Racing the BC EPIC 1000 (Video)

What happens when the body wants to keep going, but the mind says no? Mike Coulter took on this year’s BC Epic 1000 with the goal of finishing the 1,040-kilometer route in under three days, his longest ride yet. Watch the 17-minute video he filmed during the ride here…

The BC Epic follows a 1,040-kilometer route with 11,000 meters of elevation gain. It traverses South Central BC, starting in Merrit and ending in Fernie, mostly along the Trans Canada Trail. The route is about 80% off-road on mostly decommissioned rail grades (Kettle Valley Railroad from Brookmere to Midway, Columbia Western from Midway to Castlegar, and Great Northern from Salmo to Nelson), with a few sections of challenging singletrack and the rest mostly on rough gravel forest service roads and about 100 kilometers pavement.

Each summer, riders gather from across the province and beyond to participate in the grand depart, and it has been getting more popular every year. Some riders take their time to enjoy the scenery while others ride non-stop and complete the challenging route in mind-boggling times. This year, Mike Coulter set out to finish in under three days, and he filmed his experience along the way. Watch the video he put together below.
