The folks at Hyperlite Mountain Gear love a good adventure that pushes the boundaries beyond getting from Point A to Point B, especially when the people taking them can incorporate some understanding of a place’s history in telling their stories. Longtime BIKEPACKING.com contributor Brett Davis recently undertook one such journey through the American West with his wife Diana and co-conspirators Steve “Doom” Fassbinder and Jon Bailey, pedaling, paddling, and hiking 1,300 miles across Utah and Wyoming along the Outlaw Trail. Bikepacking Collective members can read all about their undertaking in a feature story in the upcoming 14th issue of The Bikepacking Journal that abounds with fascinating details and a wealth of striking images. Filmmaker Greg Cains also joined them on their journey, and he shot a 10-minute video that captures another perspective.

About the trip Brett Davis reflected, “In an era where one continually hears ‘that all the great adventures have been done already,’ I have found adventure inspiration from those who have come before us. The idea for this adventure came about due to my interest in America’s outlaw era (from after the Civil War to the early 1900s) and the western landscape that allowed these nonconforming individuals to successfully hone their craft. It was a brief time in American history when the little guy could take on the big guys (corporations) and just possibly get away with it.” Watch the video below.

Head to the Hyperlite Mountain Gear blog, The Trailhead, for an interview with Brett, Greg, Diana, and Doom about their experience following the ghosts of Butch Cassidy and his crew. Members, stay tuned for the full story in your next issue of The Bikepacking Journal!
