Bikepacking the Fire and Ice Cave Loop (video)
Back in July, Chris Wilson and his riding partner Rob tackle a modified version of the Fire and Ice Cave Loop, shooting a short video to capture their experiences along the route. Watch the video and find out more about the original route and the version they rode here…
Chris and his riding buddy Rob took some inspiration from the Fire and Ice Cave Loop by Molly Sugar and set out to make it their own. To ride it a weekend trip instead of an overnighter, they made a few modifications and added a section of singletrack on Falls Creek to create a route that was a little bit longer and had more climbing. The Fire & Ice Cave Loop
Designed by Molly Sugar, the Fire & Ice Cave Loop connects two caves in Gifford Pinchot National Forest to make a perfect overnighter surrounded by lava beds formed 20,000 years ago. The route offers varied gravel and dirt roads between open forests, subalpine meadows, and huckleberry fields. Find the full route guide here.
The Modified Route
As mentioned, there were a couple of additions to make this a great weekend ride with varied terrain and abundant access to water. Note that the GPS track starts in Carson. Chris and Rob initially planned on this but decided to start right above Panther Creek instead. On the way back, they pedaled Warren Gap Road to cut back over to Forest Road 65.
