This past spring, father and son Peet and Beau van Hout set off on a bikepacking trip across The Netherlands with a friend. They stitched together a series of bike paths, gravel roads, and trails to create De Nieuwe Kustlijn, which translates to The New Coastline. Peet and Beau came up with this name based on the appearance of their route, which resembled what the coastline of the country will look like when the ocean level rises.
“When the ocean level rises about one meter, this is the new coastline in the Netherlands.”
The group started in Groningen and completed the 503-kilometer trip in four days. Here’s a map of the route:
