Matthew from CycleNorway recently documented the “Norwegian version of Bolivia’s Death Road,” a beautiful 100-year-old forgotten gravel road that he considers one of the best gravel roads in the world. Watch the video here…
The Øvre Årdal to Valdres, Norway, is a road that began construction in 1910 and opened in 1934, becoming a tourist destination for those looking to venture further into Norway’s backcountry. It features 42 switchbacks to climb over Heirsnosi to its highest point at 1,117 meters above sea level and has been closed to vehicular traffic for decades. Matthew runs a small YouTube channel that aims to document some of the amazing gravel riding in Norway, and he tackled this road back in July. Watch the video below and scroll down to find a map of the road.
“I have been beaten on many expeditions by the relentless pitter-patter of the rain.”
According to Matthew, Tusenmeteren is rideable between July and September. He first attempted the route in July, but there was a thick layer of ice and snow covering parts of the road, making it impossible to pass with a bike. You can get there by Nor-Way bus, which goes to Øvre Årdal from Oslo and will accommodate a bike in the luggage hold. You can also take the train to Gol and cycle to Bygdin and enjoy the boat journey to Eidsbugarden.
