Autumn is my favourite time of year to go bikepacking. It’s cold enough for the mosquitoes to have left us, but too warm for the snow. Our annual October ride took place in the quiet lowlands north of Västerås. Lakes and marshes squeezed the gravel roads in various places, but ultimately led us north to an abandoned cabin for our night’s sleep. The highlight of the tour was passing through the remains of one of Sweden’s largest ever forest fires, which today is the Hälleskogsbrännans Nature Reserve. Ten years after the burning, birch trees have filled the void giving us walls of yellow on our Autumn tour.
