An accomplished randonneur, bike messenger, and industry influencer, Fergus Tanaka of Ritchey Bikes tells his story of completing the 2023 edition of Paris-Brest-Paris via Peter Curley’s PBP podcast. Read on for more on Fergus’ PBP story…

“What’s important for a bike at PBP is that you’re able to sit on it for a long time and it rolls forward.”

It’s those kinds of gems that Fergus Tanaka, the marketing manager over at Ritchey Bikes, drops on Peter Curley’s latest Paris-Brest-Paris-focused podcast. For those unfamiliar, Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) is the oldest cycling event in the world. A randonneuring event that takes place every four years, the purpose is somewhat self-evident. Riders start in Paris, ride to Brest, and then back to Paris, hitting controls along the way to ensure a valid finish before the 90-hour cutoff. In 2023, Fergus took on his first PBP on what was then a prototype of Ritchey’s new Montebello endurance road bike that he had a significant hand in developing.

Fergus’ PBP Story is littered with interesting anecdotes about surviving this grueling event as a vegan, the design changes he sought to put into the Montebello, and his background as a cyclist. Personally, I always find Fergus to be an enthralling storyteller and one heck of a bike rider.
