Available on OE bikes and through aftermarket channels, SRAM has quietly consolidated its signature Eagle series under a new system: Eagle S-Series. For more on how these changes could affect you, read on below…

Quietly implemented earlier this month, SRAM is consolidating many of its mountain bike groupsets under a new naming convention. Eagle S-Series, split into three tiers—S100, S200, and S500—aims to simplify and replace many of their existing groups. XX1 EAGLE AXS, X01 EAGLE AXS, GX EAGLE AXS, and X1 EAGLE AXS will be replaced with EAGLE S500 AXS. XX1 EAGLE, X01 EAGLE, and GX EAGLE will be replaced with EAGLE S200. Finally, NX EAGLE and SX EAGLE will be replaced with EAGLE S100.

SRAM says the idea is to simplify its component lines and make decisions easier for riders. As evidenced by the splits, S500 is built to consolidate all premium finishes and groupsets with electronic shifting, whereas S200 and 100 are for high-quality mechanical shifting and entry-level options, respectively.

Perhaps one of the most consequential changes is the use of the Half Mount system on the S100 derailleur. Compatible with bikes that still have a derailleur hanger, as opposed to the full mount system that forgoes one, the S100 Half Mount comes with a reinforcing plate that the brand says will improve durability and robustness. The S100 is also backward compatible with past 11-50T or 10-50T Eagle cassettes.

Other benefits of the new Eagle S-Series updates include improved crank length offerings. The new aluminum S100 crankset, for example, offers 30T-34T stock chainring sizes and lengths of 175mm, 170mm, 165mm, 160mm, and 155mm. It is also compatible with the 3-bolt interface and uses the 118/73 Powerspline bottom brackets. As the tiers rise in cost, crank lengths become more limited. The S200 crankset is aluminum, but uses a 6061 DUB Spindle, while the S500 crank is carbon and uses the DUB Wide spindle.

Cassette and chain updates have also been rolled out with the new S-Series. The PG-1210 cassette covers the S100 groups, the Eagle XG-1275 covers the S200 series, and the Eagle XG-1299 cassette is used for the S500. The PG-1210 keeps e-bikes in mind, with the smaller, 11, 13, and 15T cogs being replaceable. The other two cassettes aim to cover the previously available range of the groupsets they’re consolidating.

SRAM EAGLE S-Series Price Breakdown

Component S100 S200 S500
Derailleur $70 $135 $390
Shifter $30 $40 $160
Chain $30 $40 $100

Shifters have also been modernized to integrate better with the brand’s Stealth brakes, with both mechanical options using the X-Actuation standard. The S200 has a discreet clamp and is Matchmaker X-compatible, while the electronic version available with the S500 system is similar in design to their Transmission pod controller.
