The 2026 Trans Am Bike Nonstop Check Point Edition challenges riders to ride across America through a series of virtual checkpoints. The route you take between them is up to you…
1. The Concept
The Trans Am Bike Nonstop is not a tour; it is a single-stage, self-supported ultra-endurance challenge. For 2026, the event continues its “Checkpoint Edition” format.
Unlike traditional fixed-route races, riders are not required to follow a single GPS track for the entire duration. Instead, they must navigate through a series of mandatory virtual checkpoints. This format honors the history of the original 1976 Bikecentennial route while modernizing the experience, allowing riders the strategic freedom to choose safer roads, resupply points, or distinct adventures between checkpoints. Additionally we offer extensive detailed route choices to reach each of these CP’s.
2. The Checkpoints
Riders must successfully navigate through the following three mandatory checkpoint stages.
Checkpoint 1: Mitchell, Oregon
Checkpoint 2: Moran, Wyoming
Checkpoint 3: Mississippi River Crossing
Riders must cross the Mississippi River using one of the following five approved bridges:
Great River Bridge (Burlington, Iowa)
Keokuk-Hamilton Bridge (Keokuk, Iowa)
Mark Twain Memorial Bridge (Hannibal, Missouri)
Clark Bridge (Alton, Illinois)
Chester Bridge (Chester, Illinois)
3. The Route & Navigation
The Spine: The route is anchored by the historical Trans America Trail but adapted for modern traffic realities.
The Freedom: Between checkpoints, route choice is open, provided riders adhere to the self-support rules and avoid prohibited roads (e.g., Federal Interstate Highways).
The Finish: After clearing the Mississippi River checkpoint, riders proceed to their chosen finish line:
Yorktown, VA: The traditional end of the Trans Am Trail.
Washington D.C.: An alternative finish offering a connection to the C&O Canal and the nation’s capital.
4. Rules & Style
The event operates under strict Self-Supported Rules:
No Outside Assistance: Riders cannot accept private support, caches, or drafting. All food, shelter, and repairs must be acquired commercially or found along the route.
Solo or Pairs: Riders may compete individually or as a predefined pair, but they must remain self-reliant.
The Clock: The clock starts on June 7 and does not stop until the rider reaches the finish.
5. Rider Tracking
Live tracking is mandatory for validation and spectator engagement.
Primary Tracking: Satellite tracker (Spot/Garmin) with 10-minute minimum updates.
Event App: Participants will utilize the proprietary Ride Yr Bike mobile app for location visualization and photo verification at the checkpoints.
6. Who is this for?
This event is designed for experienced bikepackers and ultra-cyclists capable of riding 100+ miles per day for weeks at a time, managing their own sleep systems, and navigating complex terrain across the continental United States.
