The Great Northern Colorado Route Race is a 460-mile self-supported bikepacking race through the wildest corners of Northern Colorado…
The Great Northern Colorado Route is a primarily gravel and double-track backcountry loop linking key areas of Northern Colorado. It traverses the Continental Divide twice, traveling from Boulder to Steamboat Springs and back. The towns along the way are evenly spaced, making resupply options plentiful. The route integrates sections of Hailey Moore’s wonderful Red Feather Ramble and the iconic Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.
I designed this route and first rode it in 2023. In the years since, the “know-how” and the desire to host a race have finally come together. I believe the inaugural event should take place in mid-June; the snow has typically melted by then, the Tour Divide is in full swing, and riders are eager to get into the mountains.
Key Features of the Race:
Approachable Terrain: If you’re looking for high-intensity technical riding, this might not be for you. The route consists mostly of double-track and gravel. There is some fantastic singletrack, but it generally stays on the easier side.
Excellent Resupply Options: When I first conceived this route, I wanted something “tour-able” that would allow me to prepare for the CTR while still having a great time. I stopped in nearly every town for food or a beer, making it a very manageable logistics-wise.
The Steamboat Connection: Since Tour Divide riders will be passing through around the same time, the atmosphere in Steamboat will be electric. It’s a great opportunity for those who couldn’t make the TD to experience a race that shares some of the same legendary ground. Plus, local businesses are already accustomed to seeing bikepackers, which makes for a smoother experience.
While this is my first time hosting (or co-hosting) an event, I have extensive bikepacking experience, including starting/finishing the CTR and various other races. Colorado offers some of the best riding in the world across all genres, and I’m excited to share this specific piece of it with the community.
