The fixed route comes with a twist: At certain sections riders have the choice between either a road or a gravel segment.
These “Pick & Mix Segments” allow a wide audience of riders and backgrounds to compete, share and explore a course that gives more freedom than the usual fixed route, whereas leaving the choice for preferred surface. Either way, the event offers a selection of mostly small, quiet roads located within authentic and low impact tourism regions.
The segments are designed to give no obvious advantage for either choice, however, depending on preference and skill there probably is one fasted option.

The event offers 3 options: Road (100% tarmac), Gravel (up to 25% dirt roads of all sorts), or Mixed (mixing segments as preferred).

Breaking the usual appeal of competition and rankings, LA PERIPHERIE shifts focus towards the endurance character of ultra endurance cycling. There is no time limit and more specifically, no DNF category – riders will appear in the leaderboard by how long they could hang. This way, every kilometer counts and while everyone is a finisher in this event, the ones who reach the designated finish in Montpellier will be rewarded with a higher position in the mixed ranking, as well as securing a spot on either the Pure Road or Pure Gravel leaderboard, depending on their choice of segments.

The complete route was scouted by bicycle by the event organisers over a period of 3 years. Furthermore were the transition travels done only by train or bike, to keep the carbon footprint of creating the event as low as possible. The route is designed to favour an autonomous bikepacking approach, as there are areas with less options for resupply or hotels.

LA PERIPHERIE welcomes everyone, no matter if rookie or ultracycling veteran, all styles of bikes except e-bikes. Recommended are road bikes or gravel bikes, the main body of the route are tarmac roads.
Registration is open on a first come first served basis, FLINTA* get 13% discount to even out the average gender pay gap of the EU.
