Transylvania Trail 2026

Transylvania Trail is a 520-kilometer, self-supported bikepacking loop starting and finishing in the medieval city of Sibiu, Romania. With 7,200 meters of climbing, the route traces the Carpathian foothills, leading riders through a landscape defined by its rare preservation of medieval Saxon fortified churches, including UNESCO sites like Sighisoara, Viscri and Biertan. It is a region where ungentrified authenticity remains the norm; horse carts still share dirt roads with cyclists, and family-run farms actively work the land using traditional, chemical-free farming methods.

Designed for intermediate to advanced bikepackers, the terrain demands a capable gravel rig with high-volume tires or a hardtail mountain bike. The track is a rugged mix of forest-lined logging roads, rutted farm tracks, and quiet tarmac that connects remote, multicultural villages blending Romanian, Saxon, Hungarian, and Roma traditions. Riders will pedal past old hay huts and through pristine meadows and ancient forests that host some of Europe’s highest biodiversity outside protected parks. Because Transylvania is widely regarded as Europe’s last true wilderness, sharing the landscape with wildlife and meadows dense with wildflowers is a very real part of the experience.

Rather than focusing purely on racing, the event leans heavily into the ethos of slow travel and absolute self-reliance. Riders are expected to carry their own gear, handle their own repairs, and navigate the route while relying entirely on whatever local shops, family-run guesthouses, and village cafes they find along the way. It is an experience built for bikepackers who want to engage with living history, far from the tourist crowds, and who prefer to end a hard day of riding by swapping stories in a remote village square rather than in a modern city hotel.
